View Full Version : Has this ever happened to your child???

My daughter was born 3 months premature and has a swallowing disorder. Besides this problem and a few developmental milestones being missed she is perfectly healthy. She is now 11 months old. The past couple of weeks she has not been eating like she should. She only eats maybe 8oz of formula in 24 hrs and eats maybe one to two jars of food. She started having diarrhea yesterday and isn't peeing very much so we took her to the doc today. Now her regular pediatrician wasn't there it was the doc on call. They did blood work and say her white count is fine and they took a urine sample to have cultures done on it. She has lost 1/2lb in 10 days. She isn't acting like herself. She just sits around most of the time. She isn't interested in playing these days. They told me they aren't sure what is wrong with her but gave me meds to boost her appetite. She is only 14lbs so she can't afford to lose too much weight. I have to take her back on Tues morning but was wondering if anyone has had this experience and what it was or has any info they could share with me. I am so worried about all of this. Thank you all for listening.

I don't have any ideas for you nut, except maybe it's just a little bug that will go away in a day or two. I cross my fingers for that. I really just wanted to let you know that you are in my thoughts and I am still amazed at your little miracle baby! I hope she's feeling better soon.

If she had diarrhea, isn't peeing much and is kind of lathargic did they mention anything about dehydration? Is she just not taking enough fluids to balance out the diarrhea? I think dehydration can happen pretty easily on someone so small and I'm sure it could also account for rapid weight loss. Perhaps they can recommend pedialyte or something similar. It could just be from a little tummy bug so that's what I'm hoping for you too. I'm crossing my fingers for you as well.

Is the diarrhea really really foul smelling? I mean like nothing you've smelled before kind of smell. Her symptoms are varied enough that it could be just about anything, but she sounds like my daughter did when she had rotovirus. The only thing that was different (than a regular flu/stomach bug) that finally led the Dr. to the rotovirus diagnosis was the bad bad smell.

Started the same way with Maddy, lethargic, drop in appetite, loss of interest in just about everything. Finally, after 3 trips to the Dr. and the smell of her poo getting worse by the day, he realized she just wasn't able to keep up on fluids and admitted us to the hospital. They ran cultures on the poo, it was roto, and since it's a virus, not much you can do but let it run it's course. They kept her comfy and on an IV for three days.

We'll all be thinking about you, keep us posted.

Well we didn't find out exactly what was wrong but she is doing better now. She went back to the doc today and she is gaining weight back. Thanks so much for your replies. We knew it wasn't roto. She had that a few months back and this was nothing like that. We are getting her off the meds for her appetite and are going to see if she does okay. She goes to the ENT on Thursday to evaluate her swallowing disorder. I think that could have something to do with the no appetite. She gets choked every time she eats so I probably wouldn't want to eat if I couldn't breathe either. Who knows. I am just relieved she is doing better now. Thanks again.
