Hi Mooaa:
TMJ is a very common symptom in people in fibromyalgia. Do not be frightened. Knowledge if power. What helped me alot with TMJ is an appliance the dentist made for my mouth which kept me from biting down wrong. The other thing that helped is this same dentist referred me to a dentist at a pain clinic at a local hospital. This dentist did a lot of physical therapy in conjunction with what my general dentist did with the appliance. He also gave me botox injections to relax the muscles as I had trigemenal neralgia, and a lot of muscle spasm in my face, neck and shoulders. The botox paralyzed the muscles which gave them a chance to rest. This therapy seemed to lessen the inflammation. Do you have a dentist?
Keep pursuing truth as truth will set you free; do not let fear grip you.
Blessings,
Kirstee

Hi there,
I have tmj- have had it all my life. Dx w/ fibro for a few years too. Up until this year, I just dealt with pain of tmj. I get awful headaches (stabbing pain from my temporomandibular joint) and often will wake up aching! I started going to a chiropractor and it has been AMAZING! He adjusts my jaw with an "activator" (which he uses for the rest of my spine, too) and it doesn't hurt in the slightest. It resets my jaw and makes a world of difference. I have to be more gentle with it afterward to keep it from "popping" out of place again, but for the most part it hasn't been hard to do so. If you google "activator" and chiropractor you could find more info.
Good luck.

Hi MOAA:
In response to your question in which you asked me if I felt normal again: I no longer suffer from TMJ symptoms at all. I occasionally have trigimenal neuralgia attacks, but the TMJ is gone.
I went to a teaching hospital's pain clinic where I received the best care. Do you have a teaching hospital in your area? At the time, botox injections were a new therapy. I had to buy a whole bottle of the stuff at the hospital's pharmacy and deliver it to the neurologist for injection. Since I only needed half of the medication in the bottle, I would usually try and find another person on the same therapy who was due for injections at the same time. The botox lasts for about 3 months and then wears off. It really did help me.
Blessings,
Kirstee

Hello Kirstee, I have had several episodes of what was call
neuritis of trigimenal nerves in my mouth. I lost one good tooth
because of this and had a good one capped because the dentist
couldn't find a problem. Now I have a place behind a tooth in the
roof of my mouth that is about to get the best of me. It's been
xrayed with no tooth or bone problem. Could this be a trigimenal
nerve problem? When the dentist was told about the fibromyalgia,
he said it would have to wear itself out. Does that sound reasdonable?
I've ask this several times before, but no one has given me any feed
back. (a neurologist finally diagnosed the problem the first time in 2000, but
it was a lower tooth and seemed a little different.) Thanks for any
''light'' on this painful problem.

To MOAA:
I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner. I was given the botox in order to give the muscles in and around my face, neck, and back a chance to rest. For whatever reason (the fibro possibly) the muscles were constantly twisting and causing the TMJ as well as trigeminal neuralgia. The result of this treatment was the inflammation died down so I could heal. I no longer needed to have the injections once I got to that point. I had to have several injections in my face over the course of a year, which wasn't particularly pleasant, but it was over quick enough.
I had a 24/7 splint for about 6 months but it did diddly squat so I heaved the stupid thing into the trash. It was the botox that helped me. I wear an appliance at night because I grind my teeth when I sleep, but that's a different issue.
Hope that answers your question.

To Bilij:
I'm sorry I didn't respond to you sooner about your trigemenal neuralgia question. I'm not sure I'm spelling this malady correctly! The nerve associated with this neuralgia feeds down the side of your face and branches off into three different pathways across your face. You can have the neuralgia in all three, as well as the pathway down the side, or any one of those locations by themselves. The pain can be excruciating, as you know. I could easily trigger the most awful pain simply by brushing a stray hair out of my face and accidentally brushing the skin where this was occuring. A common misconception made by dentists is that a tooth is responsible - this is a common thing for neuralgia suffers to experience.
I had the best results from the botox injections since there seemed to be a complex set of things in motion with inflammation and muscle spasm in my neck, head, and back (the result of a horseback riding accident - no longer have the horse!). The botox calmed the muscles down so that I could heal and eventually I no longer needed the injections. I rarely have attacks now. When I do, however, it comes out of the blue, lasts about a week, then it is gone.
I would suggest you contact the Trigemenal Neuralgia Association. You can do some research there, and you'll find the help you need from that source. I really sympathize with you. This thing can cause you to be crazy.

Hi mooaa,
I have FM, too. Plus now I had my thyroid removed due to nodules and am hypo. I see a lot of people on the thyroid board with FM - and keep wondering if there could be some connection.
I have noticed a few people on the thyroid board have tmj AND fm AND thyroid problems. One person had tjm for a while before they discovered the thyroid problem - now the tmj is very controlled.
Just a thought - It couldn't hurt to ASK for thyroid tests if they haven't done any. Sometimes there is a connection. If you do, get a copy of the labs and post them on the thyroid board - some of those people know how to read them.
Hope it gets better for you. Take care.

Hi,
I've have TMJ along with FMS/CFS and CMP, what I have found that works for me is Massage Therapy once a week and PT. I've been having massages for almost a year now, my therapist is awesome, she has all kinds of experience in different techniques, which is great for treating the whole body and all the different symptoms from this/ these illness(es.) Some of what she does that helps are lymphatic massage, trigger point release, cranial sacrial release, deep tissue massage, polarity, and others. uvm

Hi - I have been getting this horrible and annoying pain in my temple, crown, ear and sometimes back of neck, also burning in ear all on left side. I went for a cat scan and nothing has shown up. It comes and goes and can last anywhere from 15 minutes to hours. Does anyone else have this problem? I was diagonsed with Fibromyalgia about 16 months ago and have really been good other than normal aches and pains.

I had TMJ and Fibro some years back. Thought it would drive me nutty. It forturnately finally subsided. I have found from my own experience and talking to many others that you can have all sorts of things go wrong. It is an auto immune disease so of course anything I think can happen. I have had terrble pain in my face, also had terrible head aches, also had terrible sores in my mouth. By the way anyone dealing with mouth sores they have a med. called Magic Mouth Wash. It is called a compound because it has to be made up and not all drug stores do that. It really helps and I mean really helps. It takes prescription. Hope that can help someone. Also Lidoderm Patches are very helpful and are prescription. Miss Shoes
