yeah we made it to our first meal. My ds turned 4 months old 2 days ago, and we had our 4 month appointment today, he is now 14 lbs. 2 oz. and is 24 1/2 inches long. But looks like a big boy, cause he has a bigger bone structure. Anyway, the doc gave me the go ahead to start food and for any of those wondering about how to feed them and when etc... this is what my doc told me to do. He told me to do cereal (any) with yellow veggies first, at the same time is fine, he told me the yellow veggies are carrots, squash and sweet potatoe. Then to go to the green veggies, then the fruits, after that, I can add in apple juice 4 oz a day. He told me to feed him like I would eat, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and when we do the apple juice, to add that inbetween meals somewhere, anywhere. I was told to use either breastmilk or formula to mix the cereal. I guess I give him as much as he will eat, til he gives me signs of no more. Well he did awesome with the first feeding tonight, my dd spit out her first spoonful lol, he didn't and was eager to eat more, he opened his mouth right away. Now the only sign I got that I think is a sign is that he started to spit out the food, after eating about half what I put in the bowl, which was almost half a small jar of food, and probably a tablespoon of the cereal. I guess he did well.

Was this a sign of not wanting anymore, the spitting it out, what else is there, turning the head? thanks

So just out of curiosity, do you still feed him normal bottles of formula in between or do they not need that anymore? DS has a couple more months at least before he's ready.

yes, sorta, after feeding them the solids, you formula feed or breast feed, and still feed inbetween if he wants.

I read somewhere that you should give the rice cereal always AFTER you breastfeed a little bit, because if you don't then obviously the baby will be too full to eat after rice and this will diminish your milk supply. Also I thought you start w/ cereal for a while first, at 4mo, and veggies 1mo or 2 later. I guess different people are giving different advice.

For being too full, the baby will start spitting up, lose interest, turn head away, become fussy, not want to open mouth.

I'm still debating as to when I should start, my DS is 4mo, people are saying 4 or 6mo, and I just can't decide. He is not showing any sings of interest when I eat, so I think I will let that decide. My DS turned 4mo, 4days ago and is around 18 lbs, and breastfeeds around 8 times/day, so I think he is still ok.

The spitting out could mean he is full, or it could mean he is playing! But usually when DS starts spitting out I quit feeding it to him. I mix his cereal with water though, he likes it a lot better that way! As for the veggies, I thought you did the green ones first, because the yellow ones, especially sweet potatoes, are sweeter and after they eat those they won't want the more bitter veggies. Just what everyone I know has always done, but every doc tells you something different!
Glad it went well!

I was always told to do rice cereal plain for about a month, 2x a day. Then introduce fruit or veggies with that ( there is no proof that they will favor sweets over veggies if you do either first). Start with a tablespoon of cereal, and increase as tolerated.
I too was told to nurse or give a bottle first, because at that little age, it is much more important than the cereal. Cereal at this age isn't for the nutrition, it's to get them use to eating. They can do fine on formula or BM till around 7 months. We started at around 5 1/2 months, and ds loved it, now, 2 months later, we are doing 3 meals a day.

Hi all,

well my dd is nearly 4 months however, she is not showing any interest in foods yet. Therefore, l will continue with formula and breast milk untill she is interested. However the recommendations are to introduce foods like between 5-6 months but if you feel like your little one requires more and the doc agree l would go for it. I will introduce dd on to solids like rice cereal in about 2- 3 weeks time.

What are some of the signs of wanting food? Can anyone help me with that one? Ly DD is always watching us eat and smiles when we do it and now we chew our food like cows to mess with her - but I thought that might be a sign???

Sue, That is probably a sign, other signs are the ability to sit with support, the ability to move food to the back of the mouth, and is 13 lbs at least.

This is just what my doc told me, even with my dd we did it this way, accept we did the cereal first for bout a week, then started to introduce the yellows, then greens, then fruits, while keeping the veggies in there also. They did not tell me anything about them preferring fruits over veggies, but I had to put the veggies in with the fruits, so she stayed eating them, if not, she did not want them.

I fed my ds last night with the rice cereal and carrots, and he did surprisingly well, better then my dd did, she just spit it out with the first bite lol. I gave him the same thing this morning, and he did maybe not as good as last night, but then this afternoon he did exceptionally well, he was soooo eager to eat, opening his mouth real wide for the food.

the doc told me the reason to feed the food first is to get them wanting and liking it, yes bm and/or formula is the most important, but I was told to give him that after he does not want anymore food. Same thing went for with my dd. He still breastfeeds for about 10 minutes after food. He used to feed for about 15 minutes, so I know he is getting enough. I guess every doctor is different. Mine did not show interest in food of his own, but watched us ALL the time. good luck
