Hi, as my other recent post stated I am going to Arizona on Thursday. I am pretty new to diabetes(since the end of Aug.) and this situation has not arisen yet. I am wondering if there are any health regulations as far as testing in public such as an airport, restaurant, casino, etc.... Is is better to test in a bathroom(wondering about germs????). What does every one do when they are out and about and need to check? Thanks!

I just chec it where ever I am. I have never had anyone make any comments about it. and I have been doing it for over 20 years.

I check anywhere and everywhere. I work at an airport, and since I'm a germaphobe I usually excuse myself, quickly wash my hands and check before returning to the customer service desk! :)

As far as injections go, I have had a few people tell me they are not comfortable watching me inject. If possible, I try and respect their request (reluctantly, since it only takes me a few seconds!). Just another reason I can't wait to have a pump!

I test wherever I happen to be at the moment. I don't use restrooms for a few reasons. First, they're usually filthy and loaded with germs. Second, there often isn't any good surface to put my meter on that won't risk it being dumped in the toilet or sliding into the sink. Third, if I suspect I'm low, I'm not about to start searching for a rest room to test...I need to test and treat a low immediately.

I try to be as discreet as possible, but hey, I have diabetes! if other people have a problem with it, then I'm afraid it's THEIR problem.

Ruth

P.S. As far as I know, there are no legal issues with testing in public.

I test whenever and wherever my little heart desires!!LOL I am more embarrassed paying for the empty candy bar wrapper in Wal Mart :D I keep alcohol wipes with me so that I stay as sterile as possible but in reallity, I am usually more worried with the number than the germs

I test whereever I need to. The table at a restaurant, in the mall, Walmart. Whereever I need too. Most people don't even notice. I've been diabetic for 25 years and for the first 3 or 4 years there was no blood testing! It was urine testing. So glad those days are over. Anywhoo I digress. I see no problem testing. I've never heard of health codes against testing in public places.

I'd say you have an overwhelming majority here. I too do it wherever and whenever I need to. I've found I can practically do it under the table in a restaurant with a date and they don't even realize I did it. Just no big deal.

I'm with everyone else. I test anywhere as well as give myself a shot everywhere....If I'm out to dinner with a new person I usually ask if they mind but most people actually want to see what I do. I've even had a few friends ask me if they can inject me. It's great.

I have a grandson who is 12 and he always wants to test his own blood if he sees me doing it. When we are out bopping around, I take my kit out and he always wants to test mine too.

I love him so I let him but it sometimes stings more when he tries it.

 I have neglected to inject in public because I have been a) embarassed and b) annoyed that whenever I do friends begin to change the topic of conversation to my diabetes - I live with it all the time and really don't want to keep having superfluous conversations about it just because I have my monitor or injection pen out! I find it so frustrating can anyone offer any advice please?

I have just read on the web an american article which says that it is now safe to inject through most clothing - most diabetic patients have probably been doing this already for years. Anyway I'm going to take heart and begin using my pen and monitor in public as I need to (AND NOT IN THE TOILET!!).

If anyone is offended all I can do is try and smile graciously and not be moved because my diabetic care is paramount!

Reading all your messages is helping me not to feel so alone with this condition. Thanks to you all.

I test in public all the time. I used to inject in public too. And I have changed my pump set/reservoir at school too, right in class.

I test wherever I need to.. I try and go to the restroom for injections.. Word of advice make sure the door is locked. I was in a small cafe in Mississippi where there was only a unisex restroom. I thought I had locked the door and low and behold as soon as I put the needle in my rump the door flew open. I was so mortified. I was new to diabetes at this time and I wanted to go to the table and tell the man I was not a junkie but I didn't. I went back to my table told my daughter what happened and she almost died laughing. I now make sure all doors are secure!!! :)
