Hello
I have tested positive for high blood sugar twice (once it was only one point over the "normal" range, and the second time it was 2 points). I notice that the last two weeks I have been drinking a TON of water and am always thirsty. I was wondering if this is because I have been consuming a lot of sugar lately?? I am not a diabetic, but is high blood sugar diabetes or does it cause diabetes?? I'm confused. This thirst came out of nowhere..I am going to start drastically decreasing my sugar tomorrow and see if the thirst starts to go away. I don't have excess huger. I am a candy addict (sorry to say). I also have CFS, and am not overweight.

The numbers are not high at all. If you are using the correct scale. The high normal is 99(5.5 International). This is a fasting high. There are so many different 'views' what high normal is other times.
The thirst issue does fit one of the signs of diabetes - but there is a lot more to it. The one or two over is not considered diabetic. The errors in blood testing are surely a lot more than that.
To your question about is high blood sugars diabetes or does it cause diabetes. High blood sugars are because of diabetes. Cutting back on sugar is a good idea for anybody. If anything you would be pre-diabetic - though you have not mentioned anything that would even indicate that either. The next question is who tested you and what is the 'normal range' you are using. I ask because if you are using what some feel is normal for diabetics then it is a different situation - if you are using the normal range for non-diabetics then it means a lot less. Personally, I believer the two number ranges are the same.
I do not know what cfs is so I cannot comment on that. As far as being a candy addict, well, a lot of people can say that and they don't become diabetic. It is not good for your health. But, that is not your question.

Best advice is to got to the doctor's office and get a fasting blood workup to make aure everything is fine. You can eat cand, only in moderation. But the best thing is to go to doctor and check on that thirst. I know nothing about cfs. Good luck.

Desert is correct. High Blood Sugars are a result of diabetes not the cause. Everybody's Blood sugar rises after they eat Carbs. Some Peoples rise more then others...but they Quickyl come back down due to the insulin your body produces. Eating Candy Will not Cause diabetes. No Body knows What Causes it. but there are factors that put you at risk, being overweight is one of them. some people also suspect that having LArge spikes in Blood sugar and the Quick fall of those levels very often also contributes to it. but this is unkown and is only speculation at this time.
The Increase in thirst that Diabetics have is usually due to Very high Sugars. Being 1 or 2 points above "Normal" generally does not cause these syptoms.

Thanks for the replies! I do eat a lot of carbs and sugar and I believe that if probably why my blood sugar is a little high. I guess I am just worried about the future because my grandmother was diabetic, and actually died from complications. She was, however, overweight, and I am not. I do consider myself a candy addict, as I said before, I feel it is really an addiction!
Just a quick noted: CFS is CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME (thought you might like to know :) ) I developed it after a serious debilitating bout with mono. I know that CFS can also cause dehyration so that could be a cause of my excess thirt, but I do noticed I am not thirsty the more sugar I eat.
