I just went to the dentist, they determained that i have MPD Syndrome... im really ticked off though, they thought it was TMJ, and had perscribed me some big freaking horce pills that i shouldn't have been taking for my age... anyhoo... MPD is Myofascial pain syndrome... it is affecting my jaw muscles, I was told that it is caused by stress, me grinding my teath and tightening up my jaww at Night! To help with the pain alittle they put me on a TENS thing... it didn't help mutch but they said it did and they also gave me a mouth gard that i can't take out for the rest of the week end unless im eating... can any one give me any suggestions on how to cope with the pain untill the medication kicks in...? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif

Yikes!this makes me so angry to read it. Same story again and again, and sooo much pain involved.
i DO NOT believe it is 'your fault' type things , like grinding, or tension. Although those things are now going on, they are not the origin or cause of your pains [my belief, born of grief].
I had the same thing, and extractions worked. they worked immediatly, and perfectly, and permanently. of course, it leads to total extractions, which I am getting done next Thrusday [uppers for now].
They know that the real problem is sensitizarion or mercury induced neuralgia; they cannot aford to let the word get out though. They are not your friends.
Dentists have the highest suicide rate of all blue-collar professionals, likely due to guilt and mercury combination. Their children do poorly in school due to a number of factors. They are the medical school dropouts who have huge student loans and therefore MUST shut up and keep working.
I have never met a dentist I like, obviously. maybe I shouldn't be saying what I think, and thats why I am holding back a bit.
So my advise? Keep up a good relationship with them, but become more informed, and insist on treatments that help, none of this wishy-washy crap like TMJ that never "cured" anyone - some people have less pains, but I;ve not heard of TMJ therapy that stopped the headaches and toothaches.
I think things are much more simple - the teeth are bad, get them out. You could waste a decade of your life like I did - its been 10 years since I first started asking about extractions. it was my choice to make, but they refused. only in the past 18 months did i get the first extractions. Even when the resulkts were so good, they continued to try and convince me to get regular dental treatments done, as if they didn't hear a word I said. When I held my ground and insisted on getting helped BY THEM, but did not show up for anything but extractions, they sent me to a dental surgeon, and he didn't argue at all.

Hey Kurai,
Don't believe the doctors when they can literally tell a 14 year old that she has had to much stress and caused this disorder. I serious don't believe that. So far I know that tmj does not have a cure but that does not mean one won't appear. There are a lot of treatments out there for this disorder and depending on how bad you are they can help so much that you can feel like you got cured. But even then I know so far you will always have to take care of it. I really hope I am in that boat but my tmj is pretty bad off.
