View Full Version : Preexisting Condition (insurance change)

I was in a serious mountain climbing accident recently and subsequently have required some surgery. At the time of the accident I was insured by Blue Cross (covered under my wife's corporate policy). The Blue Cross insurance expired at the end of November (a couple of days ago). I'm a bit concerned about the sequence of events considering I may now require another surgery. We signed up for the new insurance back in august 2005 and made the start date for the new insurance dec. 1, 2005. My accident was in early October 2005 and so all of the medical issues to date (including one surgery) were thru blue cross from my wife's old job. I thought I was done with all of the medical visits from this accident, but at a recent doctor visit it became apparent that I may need another surgery in the next month or so.

My question is...who's responsibility is it to cover a surgery from an accident that occurred under ins. company A's watch (Blue Cross) and the condition is now continuing under ins. company B's (Caremark) watch.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated in this matter. I hope I'm not in trouble?

Suggest you immediately!!! call the HR office at your wife's ex-employer and ask to get continuing coverage on that company policy. Cobra might still be available and if so I suggest you grab it. Your new insurance company application probably has a statement that if there are any changes in your health before the policy goes into effect and after the application, then they do not have to cover it. Also, call the new company and ask them. No insurance company wants to buy a known health problem. Good luck.

Call the agent who set you up with the new insurance. Find out if they accept a certificate of credible coverage. The new insurance might have a pre-existing clause, but if you were continually covered prior to becoming effective with them, they will "grandfather" you in. You may also call your new insurance company directly and they should be able to answer your question.

for sure call blue cross since you have been covered through your wife at work, you should be able to still have the option to carry that plan or get a COBRA plan.
I had coverage with Humana once upon a time because I worked for them but I didn't have any health problems then so, I figured I didn't need insirance after I stopped working there, I let it run out. Their HR sent me a paper telling me I could continue my coverage at different rates or go for COBRA (i'm still not sure what cobra is eactly but it's some kind of coverage). Anywa, I though, nahhhhhhh I don't need coverage! WRONG! Within one year of not being covered I started havign all kinds of new problems (at the age of 27 then) and now I can't get covered to save my life so, I do without treatment & care I need. I only go for the things I can't handle AT ALL anymore and still can't afford that so, I suffer a lot just thinking about it is enough to drive a person nuts.
Once you move on and let go of the old insurance you have through a job you have a time frame where you can go back and get covered again through them. I forget how long the time frame is so, don't waste another second. The chances of you getting coverage with a new provider and having pre-existing conditions is slim to none. I can't get coverage now just because of having anxiety! completely denied.
