View Full Version : A possible solution to dry eyes.....

I'd been suffering from chronic dry eyes for 2+ years. I'd tried numerous lubricant eyedrops, as well as Restassis. These helped some, but nothing gave me lasting relief. Last September, for obvious reasons of vanity, I decided to try Botox for the first time, in the forehead region. Ironically enough, within 2 weeks, my dry eye syndrome and eye strain subsided dramatically, to the point that I rarely need eyedrops, if ever. Was I surprised!!!! and relieved!!! My only guess is that, due to the forehead muscles relaxing, my eyes muscles and lids have relaxed too and are thus able to stay more lubricated..... I really don't know why...., but I wanted to pass this on to whoever has tried anything and everything and are desperate..... Botox has been used to treat various ailments. I'm not sure why eye doctors have never suggested this as a possible treatment. I feel like I stumbled upon it..... I mentioned this to my dermatolgist, who administered the Botox, and he wasn't surprised at all that it gave me dry eye relief. Hope this might help, as odd as it might sound.

By chance, did you ever have eyelid surgery? The reason why I ask is that I've heard from eye doctors that patients who have undergone this type of surgery suffer from dry eye as the eyelid muscles are slightly upward and not in a relaxed or natural position. This may explain why your eyes responded really well to the Botox. Just a thought...

No, I have never had eyelid surgery. Only tried Botox once and the help with the dry eyes was a plus... I was hoping the Botox would help with my eye strain, which it did, while the help with my dry eyes was unexpected.

Botox for Dry eyes syndrome has been mentioned to me before by my opthamologist. I have not tried it as of yet. I am at my wits end however! I am going into in on Jan 24th and may mention it to him.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I can see the logic in this cure, but I cannot find any mention of it in databases of scholarly medical articles or medical news articles.

I know post is a bit old, but can i just ask you what type of dry eye you have? how significant was your relief, and how bad were your eyes before hand? this is one one the few treatments available in the UK. Probaly becuase it is not a dry eye treatment  Did you have to go to anyone in particular or any type of botex, or is it a standard procedure for botex? thanks

I was diagnosed with mild blepharitis, but the chronic grittiness; etc. was driving me crazy. I went to my dermatologist to get a standard treatment of botox, to smooth out my forehead wrinkles, above my eyes. Little did I know then, that I'd experience so much relief from my dry eye syndrome. I now don't have to take any of my old meds and get botox every 4-6 months. I wish my opthamologist would prescribe it, so, I might get some insurance coverage, but, at this point, I pay for it. But it's worth it, to have lasting relief from chronic dry eye. I figure with my co-pays for my older meds, which I now don't have to take, these added up to almost one session of botox, so, I break even in that way. It's worth a try.
