Hi,

I am looking to build up some muscle, not body builder style but about an extra stone. Im nearly 11 stone and 5'10.

But my question is can I do cardio and and gain muscle? Lots of people have told me to gain muscle you should cut out cardio. But rugby players/boxers/sprinters/ footballers do massive amounts of cardio (probably more than I could fit in in a week) yet they are still muscular.

I am a footballer so it is important that I maintain my fitnesss levels which means lots of running but am a stopping my hard work on the weights giving me any benefit by doing cardio?

Cheers

Tom

You can do cardio, but make sure you eat enough extra calories to compensate for the calories you burn.

Let the football be your cardio and use weights to build the muscle.

Just make sure you bump up your calorie and protein intake and you should be fine with doing cardio 3 times a week or so (playing footie etc)... It may mean that you don't bulk up AS quickly as you would dropping cardio completely, but if you have the right diet and a focused exercise program and stick with it, then you'll see some results.

The thing you have to look at with the athletes you mentioned is that many of them are going to be genetically blessed with a more muscular or just larger physique to begin with whereas you will have to work harder in the gym and kitchen to achieve a similar physique.
