I have a 5 week old baby, and I was wondering how you fellow moms out there did your baby's laundry. I started washing his clothes seperate from the rest of the family's clothes, but was wondering how long should I continue to do this? So I was wondering did any of you do this, and for how long?? Thanks for the help!!

I used to separate the loads. Not anymore. I think at about 1½ months old, all her clothes got done with mine. I use regular detergent on the baby clothes.

The smell of baby laundry detergent was fun and so nice while I was pregnant and in the early weeks, but got old REAL quick.

Well I am still washing my son's clothes seperately and he is 17 months old. I wasn't sure when I could stop or switch. So just continued. I now am expecting a second child in Jan, and figured I would just continue with his and hers together. Otherwise I had intended to stop the Dreft on his at 2yrs old. I do wash all the reds together, but use his dreft so I can do all the reds in one load.

So have ya'll had no problems with using the regular detergant on your infants things?

I do it separately only because I like the smell of the baby detergent. Otherwise, I would just do it with our clothes. We use perfume/dye free detergent for ourselves anyway because my hubby and I both have sensitive skin, very hypo-allergenic. The only other reason I do it separately is because I wash the baby clothes in warm water, and ours in cold. At first I washed DS clothes according to the labels (some warm water, some cold, some whites, colours, etc...) This meant doing about 3-4 different loads, some with only a couple things!! Now I ignore the labels and everything goes together in one load in warm water! And what do you know, everything comes out fine. I'm sure eventually the baby scented detergent will become old for me too, and I'll just do everything together.

I washed all of our clothes in baby detergent for about 4 months and then switched everyone back to regular. I did that with both of my babies.

My suggestion is to wash one baby item in with your regular laundry. If your baby wears the item and has no type of reaction then you should be fine. The whole point of "baby detergent" is to ensure you don't irritate baby's skin. Even some adults have sensitive skin so it is impossible to predict if normal detergent will affect your baby. More than likely it will fine.

First of all, let me start by saying I am the mother of tow very messy twins! I never used dreft (too expenseive and ped told me it's a scam anyway) and always have washed their clothes with ours using normal detergent. I use whatever detergent is on sale too. Just use the extra rinse cycle on your machine if your concerned.

Baby detergent is as big a waste of money as "nursery water".

With my first son I bought and used Dreft on his laundry, after that bottle was gone I never bought any more. I never used Dreft or any other special detergent for my 2nd son. They have had no issues with the regular stuff. I too also heard that it wasn't necessary to use any thing special. Plus it's too expensive.

Iusually wait a bit to wash my son's clothes, so I have about a load a week. I dn't bother seperating them at all. I just use a regular detergent that is without colouring or fragrence. It seems to work well for me :) I honestly think washing them together with my clothes would be annoying because of all of his little socks and stuff.

I usually wash my dd's and ds's clothes together, then ours seperate. I use tide h.e. as I have a front load washer and you are not supposed to use regular detergent, you have to use high efficiency stuff, less sudsy etc... they have many h.e. types, but none in baby clothes. both kids seem fine with it. good luck

I was told by the dermatologist and the ped. that baby detergent was a scam too. I use tide free, and do it all on the double rinse. I also wash all of ours together.

My DD has very sensitive skin, so I do her clothes separately. I have found that I can do all her lights and darks in the same load and that the colors don't bleed. I have a separate clothes hamper in her room to keep her clothes separate and that seems to work well. When I do the laundry, I just grab her clothes hamper and do a load for her when I'm finished with ours. I hesitate washing them together since her skin is so sensitive. She's only 7 months.
