My right breast is hurting me so bad. My baby has no problem sucking, actually, he sucks extremely hard. I need to give this breast a break without affecting the milk supply. I don't even know, maybe it is infected. I know I am latching him on properly because the skin is not broken or cracked and the other breast is fine. I did have problems when I first had him. My nipples were so cracked and the right was the worst. Someone told me to be careful of that one because it could get a clogged duct. I have no idea if I have one or not, I don't feel any hard spots after he feeds. If I do, I compress really well. Help me give my breasts a rest!

Sounds like a plugged duct to me. The only way to clear it up is to have him nurse on it and warm compresses. I used to heat a wet washcloth in the microwave and put it on the area right before I would feed. Then I would hold my breath while he latched on becasue it hurt so badly. I used the warm compress like once an hour or so.
Other times when I had pain, I noticed a cut under the nipple from his teeth. I had to wait for the cut to heal before the pain went away. Very terrible time.
Either time it took a couple to a few days to go away and then I was fine.

I agree with Rouge. If you are having pain something is wrong. I'm not sure if your baby has teeth or not but I am feeding my 9 month old (with teeth) 3 times a day and I have had to go back to using Lanolin. He doesn't bite me (usually) but the teeth still rub and they can be sore. So I would suggest what Rouge said and using Lanolin.

Just be careful and watch for hard spots in your breasts, soreness, and red marks/streaks on the skin on your breasts.
Just speaking from a recent experience in recovering from a nasty case of mastitis (an infection that results from a clogged duct). I didn't pay attention to the signs and ended up being laid up with a general infection, severe chills, 102 degree fever, sore/achy feeling, the works. It was horrid, especially when you have a baby to take care of at the same time.
...and the doctor told me I could have prevented it by taking care of the clogged duct before it became infected. Egads!

Try taking a really long hot shower, and massage that breast. It took me a couple of days, but it beats getting mastitis!

I was having the same problems and someone on here suggested changing positions each time I nursed. So I would do the cradle hold, then the football hold and then lay down and feed and it made a HUGE difference! I also reccommend the hot shower and massaging your breast. You have to keep feeding off of it though so it doesnt get worse.

Just so happens I did that this morning before feeding on that side. I also pumped and massaged that area. I was still full of milk and latched him on. It was not as sore as it was. I feel much better but will keep an eye on it to prevent infection. That's the last thing I want to deal with.
Thanks for the advice.

Just keep using hot compresses, and nurse on that side with the babies chin facing the blocked duct. Mine took maybe a week to go away. Just be really on top of it, because mastitis is the worst!!!

Use alternating cool and warm compresses.I had mastitis and it's HORRIBLE. The Dr told me to use warm washcloth compress then a cold washcloth for swelling.Lay on your side and nurse too that helped me.

Perhaps you could try pumping that side and bottle feeding him the expressed milk for a couple days to see if the rest helps. ?.?.

I actually did pump as much as I could before latching him on. It minimized the time he spent on that side. I couldn't pump completely, as they say, the baby is the best pump, so I had no choice but to put him on. Today, after pumping and feeding on that side constantly, I am pain free! Man, does it feel good to say that.

I had a clogged duct. It ended up being super sore for about 2 weeks and then, just dried up. No more milk. It was really weird. That's when I quit breast feeding. I wasn't producing enough out of one breast. Plus, you know, one being huge and the other back to normal! Yeah, looked pretty funny! lol!
I would take really hot baths. I would just lean forward and let the heat do its job. Also, the massage.
