View Full Version : Sleeping through the night question.

Here I go with this again. lol We were so lucky since about 8 weeks Ds started sleeping through the night. He would go to bed around 9 p.m. and then wake up at 6 a.m. We were very impressed since he started so early. All of a sudden in the last week he just stopped. He started waking up at 5, then 4 and now 2 a.m. Not just the wiggling and fussing either, he cries till you get him out. We seem to be right where we started. He's 2.5 months right now, do they go through a spurt around then? We're not sure at this point whether he's just hungrier, not needing as much sleep or if he just wakes up and wants us to come and get him. He doesn't sleep too much during the day. Usually he has 2 2hr. naps and then he mostly just cat-naps the rest of the day. They usually last 15-20 min. Do most babies start waking up more about this time? I thought they'd get better at sleeping the night, not worse. How did everyone re-set the sleep schedules.

Celestine...we are going thru tough sleeping times right now...very similar to what you describe. I just posted about this in a recent thread called "3 months old---what's your nap schedule"...or something like that. It's in page 2 right now if you want to look for it. People posted that they remember that's about the time their babies did the same.

I posted about the naps because she stopped napping in the day...and the nights we were up every 2 hours all of a sudden as well...just like you describe. Tough times.

Several days have gone by since that thread, and I think Ava is snapping out of it somewhat in the last couple days...so I do think it was a growth spurt...she really wasn't eating more frequently during the day...she was eating normal, but eating around the clock...that's what tricked me into thinking we had a problem instead of growth.

That phase lasted about 6 or 7 nights of being up every 2 hours...which is longer than any growth spurt I'd been used to. The last 2 nights in a row now, she's slept for 6 hours before she wakes up...so hopefully we're moving forward to a happier place.

I just asked my ped about this, and he had a great answer. He asked if the kids have learned anything new lately. In fact they found their hands and learned how to smile the week they started sleeping poorley.
He said that they were waking up to "practice" what they learned and that when big developmental milestones are reached you can expect some sleep disturbances.
He also said when they start walking they often stand up and wander around their cribs half asleep!
It's over now and for the past two nights they have been sleeping from 8PM-6am no problems!

Actually that's really interesting. He did just discover his hands a couple weeks ago and I'm often waking up to hear him smacking like crazy on them. I'd never thought about that before.
