Hi everyone. I do not have Leukemia, but I have a friend (Bev) who does. She lives in another state, so I don't get to see her often. I keep in close touch with her sister to see how she is doing. She has gone through the chemo and has had a bone marrow transplant, and the doctors are very pleased with her progress. She has been through a great deal, but she is now getting her appetite and taste back. The problem now seems to be her attitude. She is depressed alot of the time, in spite of being on anti-depressants. She constantly worries that the leukemia is coming back, and she is being very mean and hateful to everyone around her. It's like she is alienating everyone. I talk to her sister nightly online, and we try to figure out ways to help Bev, but we're at a loss because nothing has worked. Her son has even told her that he will not be back to visit her until she can talk to him without snapping his head off. She seems like she couldn't care less if he comes or not. This behavior is not like her at all.
Can anyone please give me any suggestions on what to do? I know that she has been through so much and it has been hard. I deal with a chronic illness called Crohn's Disease, so I know what it's like to be very ill and depressed. I know my illness is nothing like hers, but I have gone through some pretty rough times and was never nasty like that. I would get depressed, but I would start to feel so much better once I was feeling better physically. I know everyone reacts differently. Any suggestions will be welcome, as we really want to try to help her through this and support her, but she is making it so difficult. Thank you in advance.
