View Full Version : I think the pill may be killing my sex drive

Hello all,
Hoping to get some help/advice or even just find out I'm not alone. I've been taking the pill now for nearly 2 years, and have changed types a few times due to different side effects. Recently I have noticed that my sex drive has almost completely disappeared. I'm 21, in a really loving relationship, and have been with my boyfriend for 18 months. I do love him, and I fancy him, and when I force myself to have sex, I do enjoy it.
But almost always, I just don't want to do it. When we go to bed, I just want to snuggle close, and I don't want to do any more. When I was younger I had a really, really high sex drive, and this issue is really starting to cause problems in my relationship. Last night my boyfriend and I were discussing it, and he said that he didn't mind so much, because he'd "kind of got used to you never wanting to do it", which really upset me, because I feel really bad for him.
Anyway, I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this loss of sex drive? I'm considering getting a coil fitted, because I'm not sure the pill is for me. Also a bit worried that after I stop taking the pill my sex drive won't return to what it was before. Any comments or suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks!

hey. it is one of the worst side effects of the pill. it happened to my friend also and she changed her type of pill and it came back in no time! different birth control suits different people so i think changing to another pill or coil, as you said, is a good idea. have a chat with your doctor, im sure they will recommend a different bc to try. and your boyfriend seems like he understands (although im sure boys think we make hormones up as excuses!) so im sure it will be sorted in no time. good luck, i hope this helps. I was on Nuvaring for 18 months. I stopped a few weeks ago because I was tired of the weight gain (20 lbs). But having stopped, it makes me realise how much my libido was affected. I lost my libido very gradually, in a way that I didn't see a link with BC. I thought it was just because the "novelty" had worn off in my relationship. I didn't feel like sex, just cuddling. And even when I did have sex, the feeling wasn't as agreable (also because I was very dry, because of nuvaring). Sex had become a "chore" more or less.
But now, after stopping... My sex drive is back with a vengeance! (I hope I'm allowed to post this...) I had sex (voluntarily!) 4 times since Sunday, so clearly my high sex drive is back...

How long have you been on your current pill? Whatever side effects you have when starting a pill should dissolve by the 3rd or 4th month. If you're still having problems after that, you should probably switch to something else. Have you tried Ovcon-35? That's what I'm on and my sex drive is great. :)
