About an hour ago I smashed my finger in the door that leads from my house to the garage. Nobody was pulling on it at the time of impact so it was just the weight of the door. There is about a pea sized amount of blood under the nail that is dark red/black. It is throbbing but the pain is by no means excruciating so I am wondering if it's absolutely necessary to get the blood drained for health reasons(to prevent infection or something) or if it will just heal on it's own.

If the hematoma gets bigger and swells against the nail plate to become VERY painful, then I would say to bore a hole through the nail plate to relieve the pressure and drain the blood. If the pain goes away within 24 hours, I say leave it alone.
