View Full Version : Mitral Valve Prolapse = Weakness?

Hi everyone,
I had a 2-D echocardiogram done last week and a 24 hour holter monitor for palpitations I have had for a year. The ultrasound technician said she was not at liberty to say anything but I saw my valve flapping away in the ultrasound and asked if it was MVP. She said, yes that is it.
I have suspected it for a while as quite a few people in my family have it.
I was wondering though if anyone with MVP experiences muscle weakness?
I used to exercise every day and was in great shape until I started feeling sluggish and experienced exercise intolerance. I feel I can no longer exercise because I get weak and shaky just from sweeping the floor or taking a shower! I have to sit down often because I get light headed from simple tasks. My arm and leg muscles shake with mild exertion and I tire easily. Climbing the stairs is difficult to say the least. This is very hard for me. I am 23 years old, otherwise healthly and a single mother of 3.
Does anyone have any suggestions for the weakness? I am a Nurse Assistant but am unable to work because of the muscle fatigue right now. This worries me because I am the sole provider for my children.

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Michele

No, MVP will not cause such severe muscle weakness. Please see your doctor, because something else is going on.

i have pvc's im also 23, I too sometimes have weak thighs and my arms can barely hold me up without shaking a little. Im not sure if its due to my lack of excerise or what but i do have the same thing in a way. just not to your extent

Hi Michele,
I have a shaking chest like blowing bubbles (not strong beating, but light and fast). Actually, can hear the noises. Head feels a bit fizzy and a bit SOB as well. Now seem like it happens on my legs, hands and abdomen too. It is on and off and the duration could be around 5-10 minutes! I don't know is that a mild kind of "pin and needle" or electrical current running around  Do you have that kind of sensation too? Pika.

Hi Michele,

If your MVP is severe, there will be a reduction of oxygen to the skeletal muscles, and as a result there will be fatique and muscle weakness...cardiac output is compromised!

I had severe MV regurgitation, and with medication, it is now moderate, but I can't tolerate more than 3.6 mph (30 min) on the treadmill. However, with meds there is an on going improvement as a previously enlarged LV is now closer to a normal size as well as other signs.

However, the fact there has been a fast transition to your current condition may indicate other issues as well MVP. You should get the medical report of your echo test output, and this will give you better information for help when you consult with your doctor. This forum can help you if you have any questions relating to the test results.

hmmm i dont think i suffer the same thing, i have bit of a nervous problem, if i get nervous just a little or even excited, my body trembles a little. the only spot i get my weakness is my thighs, but after about 10 min of walking around, it stops, could be my utter lack of a solid eatting habbit and lack of excercise. can anyone reply on my situation? btw i have pvc's not mvps, and i only have pvc's. and my arms and legs get the same sensation even if im sitting at my pc for a period of time.

thanks
