Since being diagnosed last month with type 2, I have been testing my 2 hours after eating sugars with different things to see what I react to. For breakfast today I ate a garlic bagel with cream cheese, no butter. My 2 hour test was 185. I ate a little bit of taco salad for lunch and forgot to test. I am nearing my period and raging craving chocolate. I accidentally ate 2 hershey bars with almonds. Waited 2 hours and my reading is 139. How can that be? Pure sugar gave me a lower reading than a bagel. I don't get it.....

You will find that flour products will drive your numbers up more than just about anything else. It turns to sugar faster than most things(flour is like pure sugar). I do understand the trying different things to see what works and what doesn't. I tried that at first. It really comes down the what is in the item you are eating. You have to read the labels real close and NEVER believe what it printed on the front. You have to read even deeper than the FDA required labels. It is fine to learn what you can eat - it isn't really that difficult once you learn what does what to your bg levels.

Bread Will raide your blood sugar much faster then chocolate will. IT is not the Sugar conten that decides how fast it rises. The GI of chocolate is actuallly rather low. But with Chocolate It will continue to rise for a bit longer period of time then Bread.

Most chocolate (as in candy bars, as opposed to cocoa powder) contains a fair amount of fat, which is why it will raise your blood glucose more slowly than some other types of candy/sugar items.

While you did eat cream cheese with the bagel, which contains fat and which should have slowed the absorption, it would depend on how big the bagel was and how much cream cheese you put on it. Most of the store-bought bagels contain at least 55 grams of carbs, while if you used the cream cheese sparingly, it would not necessarily have been enough fat content to slow the absorption of the bagel carbs.

I just saw your post and hope you are there. It probably been said already that during the cycle, the glucose levels will be above normal. Hope you will try to learn to regulate better during the cylce and watch the refine sugars, like in candy, during that time. Good luck on the next one.

I don't really know what I am doing! I have not been given instruction from my doctor...I ordered a book on ***********......The Glycemic index...
I do not eat a lot of potato but I do eat bread. I have switched to wheat at home for everything and my kids don't even mind it! Sugar free items are plentiful, even my flavored cream for coffee! I am trying! I have three little amazing boys to raise so I want to be healthy.

Also, I am not even really sure what values I should be striving for. It is totaly different than when I was pregnant and had the gestational form. I had to be under 100 at fasting and under 120 one hour after eating. I did insulin shots twice a day with my last 2 boys.
