I'm taking Ovcon-35 and recently my best friend told me that I'm at risk for an ectopic pregnancy because I've started spotting/bleeding (not my period) after 10 months of taking it. She says that the risk is there because the pill has become less effective. Could this be true? I am 35, maybe my hormones are changing? I'm really concerned. Any advice would be appreciated. :)

It's not likely. Sometimes spotting happens, even after several months of taking it. Spotting does not indicate decreased effectiveness. Don't worry about it at this point. However, if the spotting continues next month, let your physician know; you may require a different combination of hormones.

What makes an ectopic pregnancy more likely to happen is infection or scar tissue in the tubes, not your hormones. Since you are on BCP it is unlikely that you are pregnant anyway. The symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy is pain in that area, not spotting.

I'm not pregnant, nor do I think I'm pregnant. But, like I said, my friend seems to think that the bleeding/spotting means that the pill is now less effective. She's thinking I might get pregnant and that it'll be a tubal. She had one before, but she said hers was from missing too many pills. Anyway, I done a lot of research last night on it. The only things I kept seeing as to why it might happen is just what you said: an infection or scar tissue. I did see a lot about their being a risk with the IUD or POP (progestin-only pill). I'm on a combined pill, though.
