View Full Version : When to give other foods than breastmilk

I was wondering when everyone started their babies on cereal, water, anything other than breastmilk? I was told nothing until he was 6 mos. This seems odd since my baby is such a big eater and growing so fast. I feel drained some days because he eats so much. Is it wrong to give him formula every once in a while?

I started DS on cereal at 3.5 months. I just gave him a little rice cereal at night before bed. I didn't give him any other foods or cereals until he was 5 months. As to other then breastmilk, DS was formula fed. . .

I started Justin on Cereal at 4 months....I added a little fruit to the cereal at 4.5 months. At 5 months we started all the fruits and veggies. This was per my doctors guidelines for formula fed babies, for breast fed babies they say that you could wait untill 6 months until starting anything, but don't have to.

I plan on delaying solids until about 6-7 months. Then I will start with soft, mashed up, table foods like sweet potatoes, avocado, banana etc. I think we're going to skip right over the cereal. Since we're waiting so long to start I don't think it will be a problem. We're delaying because it takes awhile for a babies gut to develop and starting solids too soon ( in some children ) can irritate their systems and even cause them to develop food allergies.

Talk to your doctor about your specific child and their reasoning for wanting you to wait until 6 months and then decide for yourself. Our doc says to start them at 4 months, unless there are serious allergies in the family history to watch out for. I wasn't able to breastfeed, but I do know a lot of women who have either switched to formula or supplement with formula. There is nothing wrong with that. Perhaps talk to your doctor first because you want to make sure you gradually ease out of breastfeeding or supplementing so you don't cause any issues. How old is your DS?

I haven't had experience yet, DD is only 3 months old. I do know the Pediatrician told me at the 2 month visit that we will be discussing solids when we go to the 4 month checkup.

My son is 1 month this week. I give him a bottle of formula occasionally now. I didn't talk to the doctor about it yet. I figured if it saves my sanity then its okay. He hasn't had any problems with it. It just seems he is eating like crazy all of the time. Maybe I don't have a strong supply of milk or maybe its low on nutrients? How would I know this? Actually, that doesn't make sense. He's gaining weight like crazy. I guess I just have a strong eater, more of a reason to give myself a break sometimes.

As for the weight gain, just to clarify, it isn't because of the formula as I just started doing that and only give him 2oz of formula every few days.

Your baby may be having a growth spurt and it seems like they are attached to the breast 24/7...I didn't start any of my children on any solids until 6 mo...Just talk to your ped and see what they have to say...Ralinda

My baby already went through his growth spurt 2 weeks ago. It's just certain times of the day he feeds like that, well, morning and evening he does it. Sometimes its just too stressful for me. I think I just don't have enough confidence in my milk supply.

We started feeding DS some rice at two months, it really really helped with the banshee screaming. At almost four months we started with veggies, but he just wouldn't have anything to do with it. At our four month visit the Dr told us to start them. I think it depends alot on the baby, there is like this guideline, I think you can find it on the internet. It's something like, when they can hold their heads up, pick up objects, and sit with support and there is something else I can't rember!
