hi everyone,
wondering if anyone had any advice for me, at the moment my body has gone into staravation mode because I have been limiting my calorie intake to about 400 a day for the last 6 months. I do want to begin to eat more but have a fear of putting on weight was wondering if anyone had any advice they could give me in to ways I could eat more without putting on weight.
Scared and Dont now what to do.
Thanks

Go See A doctor. 400 calories a day is Very dangerous for as long as you have done it. If you have fear of Gaining weight Then It sounds like you may have an eating disorder. Go get some help as quickly as you can.

pipermac, just gave you the advice and it's good advice so you should follow it. you need to stop hesitating over this decision and trying to find the "miracle" cure and get help now. when you start eating more, YES you will probably gain weight INITIALLY, but as your metabolism kicks back in and your body readjusts to eating, any excess weight will drop off. seeing as you have a strong fear of weight gain, i strongly suggest you meet with a dietician and therapist as you begin refeeding yourself. it'll help to have the professional advice and open forum to discuss your feelings. good luck and please get help soon. you are REALLY hurting your body right now and the only way to stop is to start eating (and no, like i said before, there is no "miracle" diet that will keep you from gaining weight at first. unfortunately, your metabolism is screwed up and you need to let it fix itself.)

Clare,
I agree with the other poster: you really need to start to increase the calories you eat each day. It is extremely dangerous to eat so little.
I am 26 years old, weigh around 135, and I'm about 5'8" tall. This is only two inches taller than you, and I am considered thin for my height. I eat a fair amount during the day, and I can tell you that, from experience, you will actually do better to eat steadily throughout the day rather than starve yourself, as you body will tend to maintain the weight (fat and muscle proportions) if you give it enough to eat in order for it not to go into starvation mode. Remember: your body needs protien to build muscle and, the more muscle you have, the more fat you will lose through exercise and eating balanced meals.
Why have you been eating so few calories??
What do you normally eat on a given day??
I second the recommendation to see a dietician (or at least someone who is very knowledgeable in this area) to guide you to make healthy choices regarding any attempts at weight loss.

Hello,
I can relate to your situation. I never went down to as little as 400 calories, but when I was 18 I had anorexia and even when I wanted to get well again I had that extreme fear that my body would put on weight immediately and very fast because of that "starvation mode" thing.
Just to reassure you, when I did start eating more again I didn't gain weight like that immediately.
I think (I agree with those who said it) you should see a doctor. And a nutritionist. To increase your calories slowly, and maybe talk about some exercises that are safe for you to use (see starvation can weaken the heart too) to help get your metabolism going.
Please don't despair, there are ways out of this dilemma!
