I have started on lantis and want to know can I now live a normal life regarding meals(I know I need to keep carbs and sugars low) or do I still need to watch every thing I eat?
Is it wrong to adjust to insulin to the meals you have?
I am still trying to find my dose with lantus having started at 6 units, and stopping the oral treatment my sugar has gone up with meals so I am doing 6 unites every 12 hours to keep it in check. I will see my doc in a week or so.
Need some advice.
Does anyone know about eating right for you blood type and does it work?

You can't adjust Lantus to the meals you have, it's just a background insulin with no peak so if you take more for a meal then you'll have it in your system for 18-24 hours and that's not good. Also, with Lantus, it can take a few days for the full effect to show so if you're starting with 6 units then you need to give that a few days and if your sugars are still high then you go up a unit or two and see if that helps. I'm sure your doc has given you suggestions for that. Does he/she want you to call every so often to discuss upping the dosage?
Yes, you'll still need to watch what you eat. Did they give you a meal plan? Usually they have a suggested amount of carbs per meal and I think the average is about 35-45 carbs per meal. That's reasonable and easy enough to stick with. You should try to keep the carbs around the same number each day, that way your insulin will be equally effective each day.
It takes time to get the Lantus dose correct and you may find that you also need an oral medication to keep things level but hopefully the Lantus will be all you need, once you get your dosage correct.
Good luck, hang in there.

"Eating right for your blood type" is a crock...just another gimmick that sold a lot of books.
Ditto everything Linda said about Lantus and about meal plans. If you want more flexibility regarding eating, you could add humalog or novolog and learn to count carbs. With that regimen, you'd still take your Lantus as you do now, but you'd take a shot of Humalog or Novolog every time you eat, and the amount would depend on the number of carb grams you plan to eat. There's a learning curve, and usually you learn to count carbs first, before you go on the humalog/novolog.
Also, while that regimen ( Lantus plus humalog or novolog) gives you more flexibility, you still need to be somewhat cautious. If you gain weight it will affect your insulin needs and, without a normal pancreas it's difficult to keep your numbers down no matter how much insulin you take if you binge. On the other hand, you could have an occasional "treat", just as long as it's truly "occasional."

You mention that your blood sugars went up after stopping the oral medicine. Is there any reason why you aren't injecting insulin and using an oral insulin sensitizer at the same time?

I have just started lantis and testing to see what my dose would be, when I started lantis I stoped my oral.
I seem to have found a good level at 6 units and one diamicron. But the nights are the bad ones, I woke up with a reading og 11 this morning so still trying to get the food and meds balanced.
