I have just been diagnosed with high blood pressue. My blood pressure is all over the board varying from 124/80 to 160/90 with it lately being in the high end. I have become obsessed about taking my bp readings and sometimes think my anxiety is raising it. If it gets very high over 160 I will sometimes take a xanax which will lower it to slightly below 140/85. I have been to see the doctor and have tried lisinopril (sp?) and troperphol and could not take either one. Not only did they not lower my be, but instead seemed to raise it sometime going up to 180/110 after I had taken the pills. Not only did they seem to raise my bp I had terrible side affects. I had headaches and was totally constipated that without changing my eating habits, I gained over 6 pounds in one week.
Now I am on hydrochlorot 25mg. But I have only been on this 1 day. Within 1 hour after taking it, my blood pressure went from 154/82 to 170/91. Do I have to be on it for a long time before it will start to lower my bp.This is a supposedly a different kind. I am worried that I will not be able to control my bp with meds.
I should have stated that during a minor operation, my bp started to go up and that the more bp meds they gave me, the higher it went, that they had to stop the procedure.
Sure could use some advice.

If xanax lowers your bp, then there is an element of anxiety in your hbp. Relax and
experiment with the various bp medicine possibilities. It's very hard to predict how
people will react tor them, and it may take a while to find one that will work for you.
But if you can get below 140 systolic with xanax (which is obviously not a permanent solution), then you should focus a lot of your attention on getting calm. Exercise regularly, cut out the stimulants (including caffeine--advice I don't follow myself, but...), and seek out advice on supplements, breathing, weight loss, etc. etc.

cccowl,
If you didn't resppond well to lisinopril or tropherol, you can consider yourself a salt sensitive hypertensive.
The IDEAL drug for salt sensitives is the hydrochlorothiazide diuretic but it acts in two ways both requiring some time. It is NOT instantaneous.
The first action is to cause the kidneys to stop reuptaking sodium and this results in the excretion of water...it should cause a few pounds LOSS. Give it three days.
The SECOND and more minor effect takes weeks and involves a relaxation of small arterioles that allow fur further BP reduction.
Be patient...since you are only on ONE drug, your dosage might be too low. I need 50 mg. per day for best results. If the 25 mg. doesn't give you good numbers in a week, take 2 a day...at once.

More info. I am a very active 60 year old female. I exercise regularly expecially in the summer when I swim at least 1 mile every day. Now I use the tread mill and walk 3mi. at least 3 times a week. I am not over weight by more than the 5 lbs. everyone wants to lose. 5'2" 119lbs.
I am a teacher in a city school district which as you know has some challenging students...but for the most part I like what I do. So I assume it is just an age factor but the spike in bp on the meds makes me really nervous.
I am not sure I understand why when I take the bp medicine that it would RAISE my bp. Is this really common? Does it always go up about 20 points from 140/82 to 165/95 initially. That is what makes me so anxious. Does it always take 2 to 3 weeks before the meds. will make my bp go DOWN rather than UP?
Thanks for answering so promptly.

It does take a while for the medicine to work, and you may need more than one to get any results. Listen to Lenin about salt sensitivity. Relax a bit. You have plenty of time
to get your bp under control, and you might want to give yourself a few days with no bp checks.

I went thru this newbie scenario about 2 months ago and was extremely nervous just like you are. Of course each body reacts differently but for me it did take several weeks of high anxiety, a trip to the emergency room, many, many (of course all after office hours) calls to the doc on call for emergency instructions about what to do next when my pressure shot up even after all the meds, changes in types and dosages of medications, and also the doc telling me not to take my blood pressure when i was so worried i would die immediately of a heart attack or stroke that all i wanted to do was check it over and over. Anyway, it finally did settle down with the help of a lot more meds than i was hoping for.
I am by no means an expert but my experience was similar to what you are having. My pressure would go down a bit after taking meds but if i took it again just a few hours later it would be on its way back up again. and the meds were supposed to last 24 hours. so i was taking meds twice a day to control it somewhat. Now i have a stronger dose and have added the diuretic. The combo seems to work better for me. It does, like they say, take a while to figure out what works for each person. And even after they figure it out, it seems to take a while before the full effect of the drug takes place. I was on the exact ones i am currently on for a week and a half before I started seeing evening pressures low enough. Since then it seems okay and i have even started trusting the meds and go days now with out taking my blood pressure. There is a future for you too...

I would think that it is extremely rare for blood pressure to go up as a result of BP meds. Since blood pressure meds usually take a couple of hours before they start kicking in, a rise in blood pressure soon after taking, might be part of the normal variance in individual blood pressure.
Blood pressure normally varies all day long and can vary quite a bit from day to day, influenced by lifestyle, environment, allergies, chemical sensitivities and your circadian rhythm. One way to determine your own blood pressure patterns is to take it several times, over several days, over several weeks, and average the results.
How do you take your blood pressure? What kind of a machine do you use? Is your arm at heart level when you take it?

cccowl, have you had any trouble with your breathing since you have been on hpb meds? I sure am. I don't know what it's from. I will get out of bed to go to the bathroom and I am out of breath and wheezing. I have asthma, but it is just chronic and has never bothered me like this before. I have been taking motoprolol tartrate and clonodine for my bp for about 3 mths. now. Now that it has gotten into my system good, I can't even hardly take my dog for a walk without having to stop and catch my breath. I sound awful. Waking up to this after sleeping all night is what really alarms me. I just had a lung xray and it's not my asthma. Have you heard anything about
Cardizem la? I am thinking of asking my dr. to change my bp medicine. The others are not doing any good. It is still high. Usually about 140/90. As far as weight, I have lost over 55 lbs. since Jan. 2005 and that still doesn't help.
I would appreciate it if you or someone else could give me some advice.
Thanks, Mary

I would bet your problem is the combo of the two drugs you are taking. Motoprolol (a beta blocker) used with clonidine will cause all your symptoms. I know cause I used to take a beta blocker and clonidine.
As soon as I got off the two of them I felt 100% better immediately. Why not ask you dr for different meds?

I have still been monitoring my bp. As a teacher, I have been on break for the past 10 days. Until break my bp was erratic. I'd wake up and my bp was around 140/87 then I would take my hydrochlorot and it would go to 176/106. If I took a xnax, it would drop to 136/97. I began reading up on high bp. In the meantime, my bp would fluctuate from 144/91 to 160/90 uusing the meds. Warm baths, and relaxing as well as exercise seemed to bring it down sometimes as low as 120/75. I stopped using the meds., continuing with exercise, trying to relax, and the highest my bp readings have been in the past week has been 146/81 with most readings about 118/78 without anything but a daily vitamin. I don't know if this will continue when I go back to school. Teaching inner city can be very stressful.
My question is do I then medicate the high bp if it goes up when I return to work or work more on relieving stress? I would think it would be more beneficial to treat the cause, but I wonder if I can do that in the midst of teaching! I can't have my bp going up and down 5 days a week. So my question is....is bp meds the best way to treat stress related high bp?
Hopefully someone can give me some advice.
