Hi all,

I had an ultrasound done a month ago to check on my gallbladder. In the process of checking that, they found a lump on my left kidney. I had been having intermittient flank pain that I thought was due to the gastritis. Anyway, the Urologist looked at the ultrasound films and diagnosed me with Pylonephritis and put me on Cipro for 4 weeks. I went back for a repeat ultrasound yesterday and the lump is still there and has changed somewhat.

The report said, "There remains a hypervascular solid mass-like region of hyperechogenicity within the cortex of the mid to lower pole of the left kidney causing a contour bulge similar to the prior study, with questionable minimal enlargement depening on position of cursors for measurement. Cephalocaudal dimension is 3.9cm and AP dimension 2.8cm on the sagittal image. Transverse dimension is more difficult to obtain on the axial image since margins are not well defined on that image. The kidneys are otherwise normal in appearance with no hydronephrosis. There is no sonographic evidence for renal cysts or calculus. Renal lengths are approximately 12cm. There is no perirenal fluid or ascites. No striking interval change of the focal swelling/enlargement of the left renal cortex."

Urologist is sending me for a CT scan tomorrow. He's concerned that the antibotics have not taken care of this problem and he's concerned that we may be dealing with a tumor rather than just an infection. However, he seems to think it is just an infection, but wants to be sure with the CT. My urinanalysis is perfect. I have no history of UTI's, bladder infections etc...
When I had a CT scan last May for a different reason, it was noted that my kidney's were fine.

Anyway, i'm a little nervous and anxious. Does anyone here have any opinions or advice? Has anyone here dealt with Pylonephritis that turned out to actually be a tumor?

Thanks,
Elizabeth
