Having suffered from this condition for years and watching it grow worse, I finally figured out that COFFEE was overstimulating my nervous system, not only making me feel anxious and frightened but also causing abdominal cramping, multiple daily BMs, and rectal prolapse because of my hyperactive GI tract. Fellow sufferers, please try laying off caffeine and see what happens! Nowadays I have hot chocolate in the morning (with a cube of bittersweet chocolate melted into half hot water and half low-fat milk); it's actually BETTER than my old waker upper!

I suggest that you cut out all caffeine-- It is of no nutritional value! You can function without it.

Oh yes, caffeine is the worst for IBS, especially if you have D. Don't need anymore stimulation there! Bad, bad stuff.... Try switching to herbal tea if you can, as hot chocolate still has some caffeine.
