My daughter use to put things in her mouth from a baby to present. Was told it's probably because she has sensory problems or because of her ADHD. Well maybe her diagnosis is wrong. Maybe she doesn't have ADHD, maybe she has something else. Her personality has always been "magnified". Another words, everything is exaggerated. And, she has a habit of putting anything she sees on the floor in her mouth. I have tried over and over to tell her how disgusting that is, but she doesn't care. She has a "don't care" "I'm free" attitude, which is great on the positive side (always happy), but the down side to this is when trying to correct her, it's funny to her. Of course, when she takes her Ritalin, she's "normal" and serious and doesn't put "as many" things in her mouth. It's at this time, she realizes how gross it is to pick things up off the floor.
Anyways, the Ritalin DOES help her, but, I feel like she has the WRONG diagnosis or missing a diagnosis.
Is there anyone else out there going through this similiar problem?

I guess not :(
Anyone? Even if your child may be a little younger and may have some answers?

It's probably sensory issues. Some people find it helps to let their child chew sugar-free gum, have a bracelet they can chew on anytime, or a necklace.
Sometimes they even give their kids teething rings for when they are at home. Some kids just need to chew.
My son was like that (he's 12 now) . We talked to his teacher's when he was in school (we now homeschool) and they let him chew gum.

what you described as the 'magnified" personality, could possibly indicate some sort of a mental health disorder such as some level of a bi polar disorder.do some research on bi polar and compare any signs or symptoms to what you read.just a thought.good luck, marcia

Ha, well, if we look to Freud, your kid is just stuck in the oral stage of development. Somehow she was never able to naturally outgrow the stage of putting things in her mouth (Freud would usually say this is due to a parent constantly taking things out of their mouths and not allowing the kid to go through this stage as is normal) It could also be that her behavior is simply due to the fact that it gets her attention, you said she finds it funny when you scold her for putting things in her mouth. There are many cases when children presumably have ADHD or other hyper-active like disorders and it's all really just a show for attention. You could always get on that Super Nanny show on television, maybe she could help you out
