confused mum 12-15-2005, 03:54 AM my little boy has just been started on dexamphetmine for ADHD does anyone have any feedback on it please ................. Sponsor Suecat3 12-15-2005, 01:45 PM Hi, Mum...I've been diagnosed with ADHD for about 8 years now, and Dexedrine has been wonderful for me. I first tried Ritalin; it didn't work and I didn't like it, and I've also tried Adderall, which worked better and didn't feel as harsh to me, but Dexedrine is by far the best in terms of helping me focus, evening out my moods, and helping me sleep at night. It still does dampen my appetite somewhat, even after being on it for so long, so I need to make sure to eat even if I'm not hungry, but that's really the only side effect I deal with. It's also been prescribed for a long time, and is generally considered a safe drug (depending on individual circumstances, of course). Hope this helps...good luck to you and your son! Sue adderallboy 12-15-2005, 09:30 PM How old is your little boy? What is his dosage? Who diagnosed him? A family physician or a psychologist? I've been diagnosed with ADHD for 3 years now. I started off on starttera, but have since been on adderall for just over a year. confused mum 12-16-2005, 09:51 AM My Little Boy In Nearly 3 And Is On 2.5 Mg For Two Weeks Then Eventually Increasing Too 5mg Twice Daily Our Local Adhd Doctor Diagnosed Him I Dont Think This Is Gonna Work As He Keeps Freaking Out At Me adderallboy 12-16-2005, 10:11 PM The dosage sounds good...still age 3 sounds young the be diagnosed. But thats my opinion. What caused you to seek testing? What type of behaviors was your son exhbiting? What has changed in his behavior that is freaking you out? Just be sure it's him that's freaking you out and not the idea your son is on adderall. Speaking from experience, my mother was and is still uneasy about me being on adderall. Still, the drug has been so benifical to me. confused mum 12-18-2005, 04:00 PM His Dad Had Adhd When He Was A Child And Brandon Began To Show Sgns Of Attention Seeking Behaviour Like Making Him Self Sick Head Butting Screaming Biting Himself Anything U Can Think Of He Does He Is On Dexamaphetmine And He Keeps Suddenyly Freaking Out adderallboy 12-18-2005, 06:41 PM I do agree with diagnosis given your son's attn seeking behavior. Have these symptoms improved with your son since he began taking the medicine? Or have they worsened? Is he showing any new behaviors? Also, your son maybe acting oddly because he notices a change in how he feels mentally when on the medicine. He may be acting oddly because he realizes that he feels "different" but isn't quite sure what the different feeling is and why he is feeling different. He just maybe too young to realize what is going on. The deal with dexamphetamine or any stimulant used for hyperactive disorder is paradoxyl. Generally stimulants would cause hyperactivity with those without adhd. However, they have an odd affect for those with adhd. It is my belief...and this is only a personal belief, not based on anything solid...that with me, having adhd, everything was running so rampid through my mind that I was unable to grasp one idea at a time. Consequently I was unable to focus and sit still. I think the benefit from stimulants is how they sped up my ability to think...thus bringing my level of thinking to pace similar as the rampid thoughts. Confusing...maybe. My point being...while you think a stimulant would worsen things, it should actually in improve them. I said all that because it really sounds like your son has a hyperactivity disorder. And stimulants should bring things into focus for him. He may actually need a slightly larger dose, as his symptoms sound more pronounced. Yet, if you notice your son's behaviors getting worse or more hyperactive, talk to your doctor. But I agree with the doc's diagnosis and dosing plan. Hope you see improvements with him soon. Feel free to ask further questions. nickkaylee 12-21-2005, 11:33 AM offense but to me that doesn't seem like it means ADHD necessarily. I was always told that they don't like to even try to diagnose a child under 5 (I think that was the age) and they really don't like to give meds to kids for it until like 6. I'd get a second opinion if I were you. nickkaylee 12-21-2005, 11:36 AM Sorry forgot to add that my son has been on Dexedrine for a long time now and it really doesn't seem to help with his attention problems much at all. It does help some with his hyperactiveness but not much. |
