View Full Version : Wisdom Teeth Post-Surgery Trauma

AmandaKiddy

I'm a 17 year old girl, and I just had my wisdom teeth out this morning-- the operation went well, but directly after surgery, when I began to be aware of my surroundings, I realized I was crying-- not just sobbing, but bawling like a baby! This is very odd, saying that I never cry in public anyway, but the nurse told my father that she found that it is oddly common for young girls to become often severely emotional after waking from surgery after being "put under" by drugs.

I am very disturbed by this and wish to ask everyone-- has any one of you experienced anything near this type of trauma post-wisdom-teeth-surgery, or do you have a daughter that experienced this? I've never heard of this being common and it worries me, so I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this topid.

Thank you so very much,

Amanda

It is common and nothing to worry about. There is no reason for you to be embarrassed about it. It has happened to several people I know.

You said you just gotten them taken out yesterday morning right? I'm getting mine taken out tomorrow morning and I'm totally freaking out. Can you tell me what has happened to you so far...like as far as pain and food goes? Please! I'm a total wuss when it comes to pain.

btw...my name is Amanda also. :-)

If you go to an oral surgeon, most likely you will not have that much pain. Here are my tips.

**You will probably get a handful of prescriptions including two/three levels of pain killers-- fill ALL the prescriptions. You may not need to try the strong stuff, but you do NOT want to be unprepared.

**I found out that when I came to I asked for my mother and thought the nurse was her, but when I realized it wasn't my mom, I got to the crying, so just make sure your parents/friends are there for you when you wake, so you just are not disoriented.

**As soon as you get home, make sure you have one of those ice pack thingies with a screw on top that you can add water and ice to-- this has been a savior for me, and I have seen little swelling at all because I have kept that pack with me since I got home-- you will want to have at least three days of recovery, though I was walking around the *house* on the evening of Day 1.

**Have some book/s or summer projects ready that you've wanted to do but never had the time to sit down and do/read them. I've finished up my summer reading just while recovering.

**As for pain, there will be little as long as you stay on a STRICT schedule of taking your pain killers and antibiotics. I have a little alarm which I have been setting to make sure I take my pills on time. The little pain that may reside after taking your low-level pain killers can be removed TOTALLY with that ice pack.. I love that ice pack.

**You gotta have soft foods, so go get yogurts, some spaghetti-o's, and Nouriche (by Yoplait)-- the yogurts and other soft foods will be good to keep you full, but the Nouriche is wonderful because it is relatively cheap and is an actualy meal supplement-- please take my advice and try some, they are delicious and a good source of protein and vitamins when you cannot be eating meats/veggies!

-----*If they give you some type of pain killer that has aspirin or ibprophen, do NOT take it-- go straight to the Hydrocodone or other low-level pain pill. Why? Because the Ibprophen/Aspirin *will* make you bleed longer-- instead of 36 hours of bleeding I only had about 8 because I did not use the xtra strenght Ibprophen I was given (my mother was insightful enough to realize I needed to avoid it.).

If you have any other questions, don't hesistate to ask - as I would have appreciated someone briefing me on the process beforehand and would love to help you out!

You said that you were given three types of pain medicines. How did you know which one to take? I will be having my teeth out on August 25th. I am not sure how many prescriptions to take, but I didn't realize that they would give me more than one!?? Also, what if the doctor wants you to take ibuprofen or aspirin? Could this possibly affect your healing if you don't let your gums bleed as much as they need to? I am just wondering.

You can take anything but aspirin. I just went to the dentist this morning and got my wisdom teeth taken out and the sheet the gave me said to not take anything containing aspirin. I recommend ibruprofen to take down the swelling. I'm currently on Lodine and Vicodin. Two of which you can combine at certain times and take seperately. Like tonight my mom shaving me take both before I go to sleep and wake up in the middle of the night and take the lodine again. The Lodine will help for pain but most for swelling. My mom is the drug know-it-all...she was put on Vicodin...we actually stil lhave her old prescription for it...and she knows its affects. If you have any questions just post again. Now having done this I would like to help others. I would like to thank AmandaKiddy for the big post. It helped. Thanks!

OK - so I wanted to kno one more thing. After my surgery, should I expect the doctor to give me multiple medications? Was it clear what should be taken when, etc.? I am asking this, because some of you have been lucky enough to have people in your families that seem to know what should be taken vs what to avoid. I know I need to just calm down, but as it gets closer to the surgery, more questions are starting to pop up. Thanks. At least on can vernt to some people that understand where I am coming from. Please keep us up to date on how you post operative conditions are going. I hope everyone heals as fast as individually possible. :-)

Hi - I just wanted to add a really good experience (so far anyway!). I had my wisdom teeth out this morning - all 4 - and 3 were impacted. I chose not to go to sleep for the procedure, and it wasn't bad at all. You have to be willing to listen to the grinding and the cracking and the tugging, but overall, it was a really good experience. Since I wasn't put out, I was able to drive myself home. The numbness wore off after about 3 hours. I was given an antibiotic for 7 days to prevent infection, an anti-inflamatory for 2 days, and percoset. My dad had a bad reaction to percoset a few weeks ago, so I took an Ibuprofen 800 for pain instead, and so far so good. I was able to go out this afternoon to the video store and felt great. I still have a little bleeding when I move my mouth or try to eat, but nothing bad. My jaw is a little sore, but not really painful. I hope this helps for those of you who are having the surgery soon!

Thanks for telling your story! I am looking to have my one impacted wisdom tooth (I did get lucky--I only will have one!) out and I REALLY, REALLY did not want to be put to sleep. Hearing a success story from someone who opted to stay awake makes me feel better. I realize I may have a different outcome, but I'll take my chances and stay awake.

I just wanted to say thanks for posting a good experiance! I am having mine out in about three hours and I'm scared to death! Seeing a non horor story really does help. I'll be sure to let you know how everything goes so that someone else who is worrying about it can worry a little less http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I got mine taken out two days ago and it really hasn't been all that bad. I chose to be put to sleep cause my nerves are like Jello. One moment they put the oxygen mask on me and put the IV in my arm and the next thign I know I'm waking up from a very peaceful sleep. I haven't had any real pain. I just have a little irritation from the stitches but that's to be expected. My molars are a little irritated cause for some reason there are stitches wrapped around a few of them. Uh...I highly recommend buying a baby spoon. I remembered I bought some awhile ago cuase they were so darn cute. I have a thing for small objects. The spoons give you the exact amount to swallow without having to proportion it out in your mouth. I was up an moving around practically as soon as I got home. It's kinda neat cuase my mom is babying me. :-) There isn't any numbness in my mouth. Which is VERY good. The only thing I'm concerned about right now is plaque. Is that a dumb thing to be worried about? I mean...I brush my teeth twice a day everyday...and have never had any trouble with my teeth. I've only been able to brush my front teeth. I mean I rinse with salt water 3 times a day and use my prescribed mouth rinse twice a day...but I read online that my mouth rinse will increases plaque. Not good news. Do any of you guys know how to minimize plaque while not being able to brush? Sorry for the sloppiness of my post...

I had wisdom teeth surgery 3 times. They didnt wanna do them all at once because i have a small mouth, they were deeply impacted, and I also had 6 plastic surgeries on one side of my face 14 years ago from a dog attack. So yea, Im a pro when it comes to this surgery.. First let me say when I woke up from the first surgery i cried HISTERICAL and I didnt know why. I was mad at everyone around me, thinking they were trying to hurt me because they woke me up as they were finishing up the stitching. It didnt hurt, I just felt the pulling. the doc said it was normal with woman. she kept saying "PMS HONEY PMS!!" 2ND surgery, I woke up crying again. She screamed down the hall "REMEMBER KERRY ITS PMS!" and I stopped crying.. 3rd surgery I woke up, and I was about to cry. As the tears were whelling up in my eyes, she laughed in my face and said "DONT EVEN START!" Then I remembered, and I started laughing.. Im so happy they are finally all out. I think back at how scared I was the 1st and 2nd time, I was even having anxiety attacks over it. Its no biggie!!

How long before the stitches come out? Mine are the dissolvable kind.

Just wanted to say that I'm doing just fine (it really helped me to read good stories on here, so I thought I'd return the favor) I had 7 pulled yesterday - lucky me, I got extras!(6 were impacted) I don't even need the narcotics they gave me - i'm just taking IB profin (sp?) to help with any swelling that might occur. (I'm a college aged girl, not some guy trying to be "macho" or something) I have VERY minimal swelling so far, honestly if you didn't know me you wouldn't know anything was even done use LOTS of ice.. I used it almost constantly yesterday.. the kind you fill with water and ice is amazing.. thanks for that tip! The only complaint I have is I'm on so many medicines (in addition to the ones for the surgery) That I got really sick from that (even though I did eat "food") Even if you feel ok, lay down.. I learned that the hard way haha. If it were up to me I'd go have a cheeseburger or something, but I don't want to tear the stiches or get that dry socket thing so I guess I'll stick to soft foods.

I was given the IV sedation, plus valium for the night before and morning of. I was SO out of it from the valium when I got there (GOOD THING!) But I didn't even feel drugged leaving the office. If you have any questions or need some reassurance feel free to post, I'll try to answer soon.

Bunny, I was told that the stiches will disolve anywhere from 2-10 days.

Thanks for the stitches info Random. I think probably one of the worst things about this is teh horrible breath and taste you get in your mouth. Like I haven't had much trouble with this whole post-surgery thing except that. You know cuase food gets stuck in the sockets even if its soft. I got like all nauseous and sick from it. If this happens...GUM is your best friend. I chewed on it with my front teeth to soften it and then I put in on the roof of my mouth and sorta played with it there.

I had 5 stitches. 1 in the back on each side. Plus I had a stitches sewn between 3 teeth. God only knows what for. I pull them out yesterday. I figured out how. Well actually one came out on its own. I almost had a heart attack this morning. I've been able to brush my teeth pretty good. Well I brushed my teeth with a new tooth paste today with maybe a little too much confidence that I wouldn't mess something up. I remember spitting out all this blood...and we all know saliva makes it look like more than it really is. Apparently I had brush against where the stitches had just barely fallen out of and a tiny bit of tissue came off. Which was on the top side of where the socket is. Although it didn't hurt I've been like super careful like I was the day I came home from surgery...just to be cautious. I know you didn't want to read something like this Random...just don't be stupid like me and you'll be fine.

If they give you what they gave me, the IV will include a variety of chemicals including: one to dry up your saliva glands, one for pain, one to put you in a light sleep, one steroid, and then-- dun dun dun.. Verset!

See, they only gave me 5mL of Verset (a drug which causes you to have amnesia about the time during which it was *****istered), but I cannot remember a thing til 6 hours after my surgery-- talk about a mind job.

But having Verset may be a good thing-- for all I know I could have felt a little pulling or could have woken up in a daze whilst in surgery-- and I'm unsure if I would want to remember that.

In any case, you'll be fine-- just make sure you have a family member/friend there when you wake up and as a designated driver, and there can be no problem at all.

If anyone can help with these questions or help, that would be great. I got my two lower wisdom teeth extracted yesterday which my dentist said was on the difficult side b/c of curved roots. I know that swelling is normal, but my cheeks feel very tight, in that it is hard to move - is that ok? It was alright yesterday and earlier today, but tonight all of a sudden my mouth seemed to tighten up. It happened while I was trying to eat a little, I am hoping that something didn't get messed up. Also, I am taking the antibiotic pills the dentist subscribed, but I haven't been in real pain so I haven't taken any of the pain medicine subscribed - Vioxx and Hydrocodone. That shouldn't matter I assume??

AmandaKiddy

You don't need to take the pain medication if you don't need to-- Hydrocodone (make sure to take with food or it'll make you nauseated; I know from experience) will be your best bet, but it'll make you woozy and very drowsy (probably).

Also, from the fact that they were doing some major work in the lower jaw region, you *are* going to experience tightness when trying to open your mouth in any degree that could be a little wide; I had all mine extracted (though no curved roots) and experienced jaw-tightness for the first four or five days in decresing intensity-- don't rush it trying to eat big things- I'm sure it could prove painful!

Hey, thanks for the reply. I wish I had found this place earlier, its really good to hear from others who have gone through similar situations. Yeah, I think things are going alright - still tight though. I have a check up tomorrow so I'll at least know for sure. I just wish the swelling would go down, my face is so big. Again, thanks for the reply....

If I were you, I would apply an ice pack to my face and take some IBprophen-- that will definitely help the swelling; I'll correct my previous statement to comply with what was said after I posted it without double-checking what I was saying: Ibprophen is very, very okay to take. Great for swelling, but nothing can take the place of that ice pack...

How did you feel as soon as you got home from your wisdom-teeth surgery? Much pain? Were you up and around, or tired and asleep?

I'm having my 4 out tomorrow morning. The oral surgeon says they will be 'easy' to take out, though one is impacted.

thierryaw

Another question.. In the check up for my wisdom teeth a few days after extraction, my dentist said he had to loosen the stitches on one side. He said that they were too tight and healing too fast?? I dont quite understand, he didn't explain much either. It is also bleeding which is supposedly normal - Im sure that will stop. But has anyone had this happen to them? Or know what this means??

AmandaKiddy
08-18-2003, 08:31 PM
All of mine were easy to remove other than one impacted, and when I got home I took a nice long nap. I also took some hydrocodone for the little pain I did have, and that makes one drowsy, so that could have helped as well.

I would just plan to be sleepy and get rest even if you're not, even if only for one day.

I just had my wisdom teeth removed Friday. (Aug 15 2003) It really wasn't as bad as I had feared, and I was SO scared I didn't sleep well for over three weeks before hand. I was given Halcion to help me relax, and I read that sometimes you are so relaxed that you don't remember the procedure at all. Not the case with me, I remember every bit of it. But that is okay, it wasn't that bad. If I had to do it over, I might have had IV sedation instead, but only because I gag easily. I did gag a few times, only because my mouth was so numb it felt so fat that the back of my mouth near my throat felt like it was touching, or closing in. They let me sit up and I took some deep breaths and they even let me look inside my mouth with the mirror, so I could see that my mouth was far from closing in. After that, all was okay. That was the worst part of the whole procedure. The numbing shots didn't hurt that bad at all, and when he extracted the teeth I felt nothing! After the first one, I thought to myself "I didn't feel that!"
I felt triumphant once he finished all four, and when he brought my Mom and Husband back to see me, I held up my fists and said "I did it!" which was hard to do with gauze in my mouth. I felt a little gross afterwards, mostly because I wanted to spit and change out my gauze. But overall, those first few days I felt awesome. I am taking Hydrocodone for pain (LOVE THE STUFF!) Ibuprophen for preventing inflammation, and Pennicillin to prevent infection. No problems there, I take half pills with the hydrocodone but on Sunday I felt real sore, so I took a whole one and it made me feel kind of "out of it" for most of the day. It was nice to just be a lazy lush on the couch all day, nice to not feel any stress or pain.
Today I'm a little sore, I may have a dry socket but I don't know. I also have a suture on each bottom area, and I also have that horrible taste in my mouth. Ick.
I go in tomorrow morning for my follow up.
I read these boards for weeks before hand and it helped me out a lot. I'd like to help others who are just as afraid as I was.
I think the most frustrating part is watching my husband eat all the yummy foods, while I eat Yogurt, Pudding, Jello, Mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs (with ketchup!) and soup.
