Maybe your doctor can prescribe medicine, like a beta blocker. It eliminates or significantly reduces palpitations.

Ask your doc for either a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker to help out with these annoying palps. Also decrease or eliminate your caffeine intake and drink plenty of water.

Yes. I'm taking 60mg daily and it has helped me so much with my heart palpitations and anxiety symptoms.

I just posted this evening as a new member. I was looking desperately for help from someone else who was experiencing what I have been for about a year now! My palpitations and flutters got so severe over the past couple of months, I finally insisted on seeing a heart Doc. I have Premature Ventricular Contractions according to the EKG. He said I've probably always had them, just never noticed them. "NOTICED" them??!!!! They are IMPOSSIBLE to ignore!! I've become obsessed thinking about how often they will happen, or if I'll get a half an hour relief out of the day without them!! He put me on a Beta Blocker. It worked for a few days, and now they are back! If I'm up and moving around, they aren't as severe or present at all. It's the worst when I'm trying to relax, go to sleep, watch TV, etc.!!!! How does anyone live like this, and why isn't there a cure??!!!!!

To "BGregory" --

I feel for you with those annoying and scary palps that pop up for seemingly no reason. Yes, you have probably had them for quite awhile but nearly all people do have irregular heartbeats from time to time. Some people are more sensitive to them than others. As unbelievable as it sounds, some would truly never notice, as your doctor said.

For the rest of us, all sorts of palps present as a big problem and in my case they were diagnosed some time ago as "benign tachycardia." I had gotten to the point where I rarely felt anything, but just yesterday they started up again and are still occurring with a vengeance. Even though I am on low dose Atenolol and have been for years, it doesn't really help when I'm (quietly) freaking out over palp episodes.

Interestingly, yesterday's palps started up right when I began a lunch time visit with a former co-worker near the old office. I didn't THINK I was stressed over it, but there were bad circumstances surrounding my leaving the company (the place is in turmoil) and I have been unduly stressed over the whole situation for over a month now. I suspect all that stress finally got to me and started up the palp problem. I could be wrong, but it seems like pretty strange timing if it's not related.

As I said, I was free of noticeable palps for quite a long time until my friend and I got together. I have other friends who will occasionally have a day or two of frequent palps and they get very nervous, understandably.

Even a doctor of mine, a woman my age (56) asked me about what brought on palps for me, almost as though she was quizzing me because she herself or another patient had symptoms and she wanted confirmation of what might possibly bring on the problem. Bear in mind that being tired, consuming alcohol, smoking, drinking anything at all that is caffeinated, eating chocolate, STRESS (whether due to good or bad events), etc., are common causes of palps along with any anxiety or panic conditions.

Even if you don't feel particularly upset or stressed, there can be things brewing under the surface and when you really think about it, you can often come up with reasons for a palp problem at that time. People with any panic or anxiety issues REALLY tend to have problems with palps if they are part of their group of symptoms. The more you dwell on the palps once they start, the worse off you will be as well. Being totally distracted, not just trying to be yet still thinking about it, but really BEING distracted, helps as well.

Some people feel the palps in their chests, others in the neck or throat area or some combination. It's all pretty typical of the situation.

Believe me, doctors see this every day and are used to dealing with it. Once they tell you you are fine, try to accept that. If you trust that you doctor knows what he or she is talking about, all the better. You need to have confidence in your physician and if you don't, best to find another one. Some people keep doctor shopping hoping to find one who says there is something major wrong. You can run through a lot of doctors that way, especially with these palp-type complaints. It sounds to me like you have had good advice from yours so please try to relax a bit and deal with it awhile. I know it's hard, and there will be episodes, but unless your condition is ruining your entire life, a medication or two and reassurance are all you will need when palps are said to be "benign." Good luck, and let us know how you are doing.
