The doctors are in a better place to tell you what is going on than any one here. The lymph node biopsy done by needle is not as accurate as the removal of the entire lymph node. The needle biopsy is done with numbing of the surface of the skin if the lymph node is on the surface of your body. If the lymph nodes are deeper in the body they sometimes have to do the surgery with you asleep. Either way it is not a pleasant thing to do and should be a call that is made by the doctor who is treating you.

Thanks for your response! when they remove the lymph node, it is to painfull? do i have to stay in bed many days? i have active work.. you think 3 days later i will be fine ready to work? do they do that with local anestesia? thanks a lot!

When I had my biopsy, I was under versaid (spelling?) and morphine. They said it was like a twilight sleep. I don't remember anything. It took about 15 minutes. I had no pain afterward and went to work the next day. I never felt anything but the tape sticking to me. It was done at the hospital as outpatient surgery.

I first had some enlarged lymph nodes. I had the biopsy first for the diagnosis. Then I had the CT scan and the PET scan. My diagnosis is a very low grade form of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma that I've apparently had for a at least 20 years. I'm undergoing monoclonal immunotherapy which is like chemo without the side affects. I never felt better in my life. I've never had a clue that I ever had anything wrong with me, until I got the diagnosis.
Oh....and I remember being very scared. I'm not anymore. (if that helps)

Hi Brid,
After I had the biopsy and found out that I have a very low grade form of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, they scheduled me for a CT scan and a PET scan. Neither scan hurts and neither scan is uncomfortable. The CT scan takes about 15 minutes. The PET scan takes about 35 minutes. Then I went to the oncologist for the results and a bone marrow biopsy which I didn't even find painful. A little pressure, but not actual pain. It sounds like you're getting everything done that you have to do. Hang in there!

Debbie, Where were your nodes enlarged when you were biopsied? Did you notice the nodes or did your doctor? What did they feel like?

Cutie, they found enlarged lymph nodes when I had my mammogram (under my arms). They asked if I had others and I told them for many many years on the right side of the groin I had one. That's the one they biopsied.

Brid, my doctor told me that the bone marrow biopsy could feel like a root canal. That freaked me out. I asked if I could have the versaid and morphine which is what they used when I had the biopsy. She said she doesn't use that for the bone marrow biopsies. I was very surprised when I had it done. I felt a little pinch for the novacaine and no real pain at all for the bone marrow biopsy. She told me exactly what she was doing the entire time. I felt a "knocking" on the bone, but no pain. She told me when they were in the marrow. She kept asking how I was doing. The nurse and the doctor kept saying was doing beautifully. I told them that they were the ones doing beautifully because I wasn't in any pain. It took a total of about 10 minutes. It was done. I had to lie on my back for a few minutes. They put on bandage/bandaid and I left after a few minutes. My friend and I took a drive down to the shore (about an hour away) I was not in any pain. The next day, it was a little sore to lie on my left side. That's the story. Not even a bruise. They did a great job. I wouldn't be scared if I knew I needed another one. She said she won't do another one "unless she has to". Whatever that means.

Good luck Brid!
Debbie, did you have any symptoms other than the node you knew about? Any neck nodes?

Brid,
I had a mammogram and they found enlarged nodes.
Then I had blood work done. That came back fine. I had no symptoms of anything at all, except the enlarged nodes.
Then they did the biopsy of the groin lymph node and I was diagnosed within 15 minutes.
I was scheduled for a CT scan and PET scan immediately.
Saw the oncologist for the results and had a bone marrow biopsy.
Started Rituxin...4 weekly treatments
Waited 3 months and new scans.
Partial remission.
I"ve have 3 more Rituxin treatments and I'll be having 5 more...one a week for the next 5 weeks.
That's about it.

Cutie,
I had the enlarged groin lymph node which I thought was normal because I had a couple of those for at least 10 years.
They found the enlarged ones under the arms when I had the mammogram in May.
I do have a few tiny ones on the sides of my neck
Everything is shrinking with these rounds of Rituxin
