I am 7 days post op and doing pretty darn good.
Its not as bad as I thought it was going to be...
If you read all of posts everywhere, if you get to the hospital, its a miracle.
I do get the hiccups often, esp when I eat/drink too fast.
Otherwise, no HEARTBURN.

Hi that sounds great! did it eliminate acid completely?? also is it painful? was it an outpatient surgery.
spider37 12-22-2005, 04:42 PM
im happy it went well for you but for some of us it is not as great as you say i have had more problem's since my surgery than i had before my surgery so for me it was not worth it my gi say's that my system is a mess now nothing works the way it should from top to bottom but i am happy for you
I had heartburn going into surgery and since I came out of surgery NONE!!! Its so peaceful in my system, I LOVE IT!!
I stayed in the hospital Wednesday morning surgery and I was discharged Friday.
It was not nearly as painful and bad as I thought it was going to be. I think if you read everyone's posts on the internet about this surgery you get scared because the 95% of people who had successful procedures are not posting their POSITIVE OUTCOMES.
I would definately do it again and I was scared to death of this surgery.

I'd be interested to see how you are in a year, since my doctor says the one year sucess rate is under 10%, so please keep us updated.
jennyVee 12-25-2005, 09:12 AM
I was just told that when the do the Nissan fundo they make your stomach smaller and you can only eat about 2 oz of food is that correct?
after reaaidng about this surgery and its complications I think i willhang on with meds, since according to what i have read they have not perfected this surgery and most that get it have alot of problems afterwards.
spider37 12-25-2005, 09:17 AM
oh what have i been trying to say it's not worth it since my surgery i am in pain everyday pain that i wouldn't wish on my worst enemy please everyone should think real hard before haveing this surgery if i could turn back the hand's of time and know what i know now i wouldn't have had it done
jennyVee 12-25-2005, 09:22 AM
yes spider i was reading online and this surgery is not yet perfected and docs dont have much sucess with patients, i guess taking meds is the best route for me
also I read that a high PH in the body causes acid so i will buy the ph test strips and order a product called barleymax, that reduced acidity, and also a product for digestion called rezyme, plus teh nexium I hope that helps since I have not been able to eat yet and this situation is not easy to handle, especially at this time of teh year when everyone is eating alot! ahh
anyway spider are you able to eat more than 2 oz of food??

here is some info for thos who dont know what a Nissen fundoplication is ?
During the fundoplication surgery, the surgeon improves the natural barrier between the stomach and the esophagus by wrapping a part of the stomach known as the gastric fundus around the lower esophagus. This prevents the flow of acids from the stomach into the esophagus, and strengthens the valve between the esophagus and stomach, which stops acid from backing up into the esophagus as easily. This procedure is often done using a laparoscopic surgical technique. It can also be done as traditional (open) surgery.

im not able to eat anyting without being in horriable pain after i only eat because i have to in order to stay alive
jennyVee 12-25-2005, 01:34 PM
Oh my lord spider i am so sorry about that, can they fix what they did wrong?
do you take any digestive enzymes? I know how it feels to not be able to eat i just tried eating some mashed food and now my throat esophagus hurt bad,can you drink ensure shakes? try that hun dont stop eating like i have done, man i had no idea stomach issues could cause such messes in peoples lives, by the way i am having an endoscopy done again on dec 28 and they will stretch it again, I am not sureif that will cause urther damage to my already beaten up esophagus what do you think?
spider37 12-25-2005, 03:40 PM
i have a hard time to get thing's to go down when i had the barium swallow done they gave me a pill about the size of an aspirin and it got stuck i weighed 91 pound's on dec 8th i haven't had the nerve to get on another scale since i really don't know if they can repair the damage they have done but i really hope so i don't understand why there isn't some kind of device that they can put in the esphougus to keep the hole open but then again that is only one of my problem's since the surgery they also think i have a block in my intestine's now which why im in so my pain in my stomache every time i eat even the little's bit of food and yes the problem only occured after my surgery to

High pH means your body is basic, not acidic. By reducing acidity, you would be raising the pH. Nexium raises the pH in the stomach.
watch this surgery and the doctors talk about GERD and what you have Jenny. Its well worth the time and educational.

Acid reflux is from too much acid. But too much acid means yoru stomach has a low pH, since ph is a scale where acid is low, and base is high number wise.

thx for claryfing this ""blondy"" I am doing alot of research on this LPR mess, I am being told different things.. I just cant wait to eat!!!! grrr
anyway i ordered the ph strips-and barley--I am also drinking alot of aloe vera juice thats supposed to help this condition.
wakkochic17 12-28-2005, 04:15 PM
Acid Reflux does not mean that you have too much acid.. it simply means that you are having stomach acid backing up into your esophagus. This could be from 1) too much acid.. 2) too little acid that your stomach is not digesting properly causing acid to back up into your esophagus.. and 3) simply that the LES muscle does not function properly causing normal stomach acid to back up into the esophagus. (or some combination). The true definition of GERD does not include having too much stomach acid. Doctors simply treat it that way because if you have less acidity and the lower the amount of acid in your stomach, the less it will harm your esophagus. Even if your stomach acid is at a normal level, it can still cause problems.
jennyVee 12-28-2005, 04:30 PM
Hi wakochic, Thanks for claryfing, that definately makes alot of sense, no wonder I was confused since people keep telling me acid refulx is either from too much
acid or too little..so I guess it is one of the two...
I have been on nexium and have had alot of relief but still cannot eat solid foods, I am supposed to have my esophagus stretched for the2nd time in a month and a half.
I am not even sure i should get it done since I am afraid it coudl damage my healing esophagus, what do you guys think?
wakkochic17 12-28-2005, 08:11 PM
my guess would be your doctor wouldn't want to do the stretch if it was going to interupt the healing process.. it might irritate it a little, but unless you have any lessions or sores in your esophagus you probably would be ok.. hope you feel better.. I know what it's like to have problems eating. My GERD got so bad one time I was on an all liquid diet for a week.. and even then I had heartburn!

Im a mess now too and would never reccomend a FUNDO to anyone. Ive developed gastroparesis now and had the fundo redone because after 6 months it came undone. Now i feel as if the 2nd one has come undone and its been 6 months again. Heartburn, tasting bile when i burp, plus the fact my stomach isnt digesting food so i now take enthromyacin in small doses 4 times a day!!! Im bloated all the time, and passing gas. It's just wonderful. I'm 48 years old and this has gone on way too long.
saraulti4 02-20-2006, 01:14 PM
Dont have the surgery! I have had it done twice and im worse off then before. Your stomach will stretch back to normal size, thats not the problem. I have Gerd again, and now I have developed gastroparesis and im on more meds then before the surgery. By the way, I went through this procedure TWICE, because it came undone. Never mind the horrible pain after surgery with gas and referred pain in my shoulder and down my arm. Now I think the second one has come undone after 6 months again. Im miserable with pain, gas , bloating and flatulance. Its embarassing.

I had the laporiscopic nissen fundoplication in December 1999. Before the surgery, I had gerd for 15 years. I tried every medication possible with only minor relief. I have not taken one medication since the surgery and have had absolutely zero discomfort since. I also believe this surgery will greatly reduce the possibility of cancer in the future. I am glad I had it done. I have not any difficulties swallowing or burping. For several years after the surgery I could hear and air bubble in my stomach when I extended my stomach muscle out and back in. It never caused any pain and eventually went away after about 4 years.
When I did my research prior to surgery, it was clear to me that you must select a doctor that has done many of these surgeries before you choose that doctor since laporiscopy is a skill that takes time to master.
