Submandibular gland: The second largest of the three major salivary glands. It is located deep to the mandible (jaw bone).

This is how I try to remember the salivary glands
3 sets:
Parotid
Submandibular
Sublingual
I think the Parotid gland is by the front of ear across maxilla down jawline (there abouts).
The submandibular gland-under the mandible bone (there abouts).
The sublingual glands are glands under your tongue, under chin area (there abouts).

and would TMJ or dental problems cause any of these glands to be tender? How do you know if you have duct stones? I pick out white peices of something out of my tonsils every now and then, is that related?

Yes, to both. However, also what might cause glands to be tender is Sjogren's Syndrome (a rheumatologist can confirm this with a lip biopsy). It could also be stones in ducts.
