for the past 3 months or so, i've been noticing that I get the most anxiety the week after my period ends ...I'm not sure if this is just coincidental or if it's acutally linked to my period
you'd think that if it was i'd get it the week before or during my period b/c of PMS, but I'm noticing it a week after and it lasts for a week or 2 (my anxiety usually lasts for a chunk of days at a time and goes away for a chunk of days at a time)
anyone else notice this or is this just me trying too hard to try to connect my anxiety to something? :)

I too have noticed that with myself these past few months. In fact, this week my anxiety is out of control, and my period just ended 2 days ago... I would be interested to know why that is too. My anxiety usually starts getting really bad about 2 days into my period and then lasts for about a week after my period ends. I still have anxiety outside of that window, but it seems to always be worse then. Kinda strange... Let me know if you find out any reasons why this might be happening to us.

I feel so much better after reading your post. I suffer from ocd and anxiety. I too have noticed that at the end and for about a week after my period is the worst for me. I asked my doctor about it, and she just looked at me like she had never heard anyone say that before. I have noticed if for months now. I started taking an antidepressant and have noticed that it has lessened up some, but is still not great. I've tried looking it up, but all I find is info on pms. Let me know if either of you find anything out.

i've been experiencning that as well. for the past few months i've noticed that. it gets somewhat worse before my period and then after it just skyrockets! my period ended on sunday, and this week has just been hell!

I just got back from vacation and am so glad to see that people replied to this post!! I had mentioned this to my psych before and she kind of didn't really comment on it so I didn't think much about it...if anyone finds out any info on this please post!! thanks for your replies!

My anxiety is horrible a week after my period. I'm 43 going through perimenopause hell. How old are you?

I am also suffering from the same thing, my anxiety starts a week before my period and last till a week after. I am so over feeling this way....and I mentioned this to my doctor and he did say that it has alot to do with hormones.

I am 20 years old so I don't think that for me it has much to do with menopause :)
MOLLY22 -- I know that hormone levels are high like right before and during your period, but did your doctor say anything about anxiety after your period? I'm wondering why this is -- I don't know much about hormonal changes throughout the cycle but I feel like the hormone level should be low after having one's period
anyone w/ any thoughts?
ckjk - i also tried looking this up but I also only found information on PMS (before and during your period)

:eek: WOW girls finally! Someone else has anxiety after their periods. I have been noticing this for a long time. I just turned 43 and have had depression and anxiety on and off for 10 years.
All the reading and research I have done indicates anxiety levels are caused by higher estrogen in the beginning of your cycle. Estrogen has a tendency to raise norepinephrine levels in some people (hence the high anxiety levels)

In my own words:
Estrogen is higher in the first half of your cycle and lower in the second half. Progesterone levels raise in the second half (if you aren’t 43 years old!) and everything is good. But, as I am, not ovulating every cycle you tend to be estrogen dominant and everything goes haywire.
The brain has both estrogen and progesterone receptors. Women who have seizures tend to have high estrogen levels and low progesterone levels.
Estrogen can raise norepinephrine, high norepinephrine might cause anxiety and panic attacks in some women.
Norepinephrine helps you stay awake and alert but if norepinephrine doesn’t drop down at night, you can't get restful rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep.
Progesterone helps with anxiety because it helps with GABA. GABA gives progesterone its antiepileptic effect. Also women with high levels of serum progesterone sleep better. Study’s also show that anxiety levels are effected by serotonin and that increasing serotonin might help.
If you are feeling anxious, estrogen dominance could be it. To balance estrogen, I take a bio-identical progesterone and take the supplements that help the liver metabolize estrogen: magnesium, folic acid, vitamin B6, and zinc.
