View Full Version : Anxiety affecting stomach?

Over the last 2 weeks ive been more anxious than ever (a few problems that im festering about).
Anyway, my stomach is giving me real problems. Ive seen a doc who firstly said it was 'something id ate', he checked me over and sent me on my way.
Ever since, ive gotten this tense feeling in my stomach, churning sensation and terrible bloating plus a few bouts of diarrhea.
The minute i wake im thinking (almost obsessing) about my stomach, im serioulsy driving myself crazy.
I cant seem to switch off from it. Im not in any pain, its just a real discomfort.
Ive had similar episodes in the past, but none that have lasted this long (my doc says ive ibs).
Sorry for wittering on, but it feels like anxiety has now attacked my stomach.
Has anyone had any similar experiance?
The rational part of my brain tells me its anxiety, but im in need of a little reassurance.
Thanks.

I think most anxiety affects your stomach first. I've had awful pain, nausea, churning and diarreah for days and weeks at a time. Then thinking about that even makes it worse. I've noticed that often I'll actually hold my stomach in without realizing it, which causes pain over time. Try to relax, do some deep breathing and let your body relax. When all your muscles are tight, it's gonna hurt somewhere! :)

hi lindsalou -

I think I saw on another post that you had just gotten over a stomach virus? Could it be the lingering anxiety about that that's still affecting your tummy? I have been having some major tummy issues since Wednesday also...I would get this weird horrible stomachache that would get really intense for a few minutes then fade away for a while...I felt constipated yet diarrhea-y at the same time. My stomach also keeps gettingl gurgly when I eat...I thought maybe i had some sort of virus as my stomach doesn't hurt today but I am still feeling queasy and tired, but now I am wondering if it is just stress manifesting itself. I have been very stressed out lately and I didn't realize it.

Mjwell - I thought i had beaten the awful stomach bug that everyone seems to have, or maybe it was anxiety all the while (although i had 48hrs of hell with it-its not on a scale with them couple of days!). Its driving me daft, i seem to be focusing on my tummy 24/7.
Yournotalone- wow, thats exactly what i do (hold my tummy in - to the point where it feels ive done 100 sit ups).
I think its more likely anxiety, but if its not improved by after xmas, im gonna go back to the doc.
Just last night i woke at 3.00am, had to run to the loo, then lay awake all night listening to the strange sounds my tummy was making.
Thanks for your replies and have a great christmas.

Linda, yeah, that's how I held my stomach in, but I didn't realize I was even doing it for about a year. I bet I have some real strong stomach muscles in that place! lol! Last year I started really having severe stomach pain, nausea, etc. It was really nasty. I never had that in my life to any degree, and I was thinking, what is going on? I lost 40 lbs without even trying, I couldn't eat half the time, and that would be the opposite to the rest of my life. I've never had a problem eating in the past and I could never lose a pound without major effort. Of course, I didn't have any health insurance, so I didn't go to the doctor either, but they probably would have told me there was nothing physically wrong. A lot of people have stomach problems. My mother and husband have all their life, and it always seems to come when they are stressed about something. My husband has pointed out to me that it always gets worse when I am more stressed, but it just seems so weird anyway! Could it be a bug, yeah, but it's not like it's going to kill you either way, so try to think of it that way. It's uncomfortable, but it will pass, and it's only your stomach! :)

Hello there!

I disagree! Yes, it can kill you if you don't get the the right help. I was
put into the hospital after loosing fourty pounds in one month..I got down
to eighty pounds and continued to just dwindle down to nothing. I also
thought that I just had the stomach flu. After several trips to the ER, I
finally was reffered to a doctor that took my situation serious and put me
into the hospital for several months..he ran every test that he possibly
could. I found later that I was suffering from a hormonal inbalance and
going through early menopause at the age of twenty nine. My doctor
said that I was very close to dying. I was also suffering from severe anxiety
attacks. I was in a hospital bed for about five months straight and in and
out for about a year. My doctor said what I had gone through was like
someone who had just experienced a severe heart attack. I suggest that
anyone who starts to notice a sudden change in weight and is constanly
having stomach problems, along with anxiety to get checked A.S.A.P!! It
might turn out that you are just under a lot of stress, but it also could be
a very serious issue!!! GET HELP BEFORE IT IS TO LATE!!!!
