I was considering having weight loss surgery, and in that process, the surgeon took blood and tested it for apparantly everything under the sun. I ultimately decided the surgery wasn't for me (am 65 pounds overweight now), but asked his office to send me the results of all that blood work for my records. Most of it seems normal, but there are some items that are "flagged"...I'm sure I should take this to my regular doctor, but if anyone out there can give me an idea of what these things might mean, I would really appreciate it.

On the page titled "CMP, PHOS, TIBC, FERRITIN, VIT B12, FOLIC ACID, TSH with REFLEX", there are over 20 seperate results, with 2 of them being "flagged" -
*ALT (SGPT) is 40 (high), normal being 0-31 U/L
*% SATURATION is 17 (low), normal being 20-50%

On the page titled "CBC W/DIFF", there are 17 seperate results, with 1 of them being "flagged" in the "DIFF" section-
*ABSOLUTE NEUT is 5.9 (high), normal being 3.0-5.8 K/uL

On the page titled "URINE W/O MICRO", there are 12 seperate results, with 1 of them being "flagged" -
*BLOOD is 1+, apparantly normal would be negative?

On the page titled "PTH INTACT, VITAMIN D, 250H", there are 5 seperate results, with 1 of them being "flagged" -
*VITAMIN D, 250H is 16 (low), normal being 25-80 ng/mL

I know that's a lot of information...it's all greek to me, but if any of this means anything to anyone out here, please let me know!

Thanks so much,
Christin

Well, my regular doctor looked over the results and left me a message yesterday, but I haven't been able to actually talk to her yet. She said not to worry about most of it, except for the vitamin d deficiency, and said to go pick up a prescription that she was calling in, and also to take a multi vitamin and drink milk (gag!)...and then come back in and see her in 8 weeks. I just got the prescription...it is vitamin d capsules 50,000 iu, take once a week.

So I was reading the literature that came with that and it said that this medication could be used for rickets...I didn't even think that still existed and wasn't real sure what it was, so I looked it up, and now I have more questions :-) It said that the symptoms are identical to the symptoms of renal failure?!?!?!?!?!?! I had attached a note to the lab results that I sent to my dr., joking that I had looked up some of the stuff and had self diagnosed myself as having liver failure and kidney cancer...she got a laugh out of that and told me (in the message she left) to stop looking up stuff on the internet :-) But seriously, is this something to worry about?

Thanks!
Chris

I wouldn't worry, especially since both the surgeon and your regular Dr. says they are nothing to be concerned about.

I think he's right, a lot of us read too much and try to DX ourselves! :)
I guess a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!
