I had appied for it once before but they had told me that I didn't not have enough work credits please help Terri43 12-25-2005, 07:47 PM Hello Rabbit, I don't have an answer for you but i'm in the same boat. I was a stay at home mom for to many years and after I got divorced and started working I got hurt and have been out of work for a year and a half. I was told I might be able to get SSI. I applied in June and I still haven't heard from them. The first thing you need to do is call your local social security office. Terri Midwest-JD 12-25-2005, 10:48 PM I'm not sure what the exact requirements are for having enough work credits, but it has something to do with going back within the last 10 years or so (I think?) and how much you've earned and paid in - so the longer you are disabled before you apply, the *less* likely you are to be eligible. You can go to the SS website - www.ssa.gov - should be able to find most info that you'll need there. I'm a stay-at-home mom too, but had been teaching piano lessons in my home for the last 12 years, so just barely had enough 'credits' to be eligible. Then was initially denied, but was approved at reconsideration (1st appeal). It can sometimes be a long, discouraging battle, but persistance pays off for many - if denied at first (as many are), appeal - again, and again, and again, if necessary. Most people advise getting a good attorney who specializes in SS denials, which I *would* have done if I'd been denied at 1st appeal, but I ended up not needing one. Good luck! JD notpain 12-26-2005, 03:13 PM I have not been through the process, but I did call. They schedule an appointment and you go in and talk to them. I imagine there is a mountain of paperwork and lots of required "proof" in the form of doctors opinions and reports. I will probalby do the first quarter of 2006 as I have not worked in over a year. But I still had income carry over from the prior year so I doubt I would have qualified in 2005. I know a friend who qualified and she had income too. So who knows? I guess you just have to try and see what happens. msmona 12-26-2005, 10:26 PM Can you apply for this if you are on short term disability from your job? lfoster21 12-26-2005, 11:04 PM You can get it while on short term disability, but your amount will be lowered during that time. The amount will go up when the disability ends. You can got to their website and click on "Do you qualify?", in the middle of the page. From there you can click on "disability planner", "How much will I receive", and finally "How W/C and other disability will affect...". It will give you all the info you need. Good luck and keep us posted, Lorie  TexasWildRose04 12-27-2005, 09:30 PM Can you apply for this if you are on short term disability from your job? Yes you can, most short term and long term disability companies urge you to apply for SS.... I had been on long term disability from my job for quite some time and they sent me a letter telling me to apply for SSD.... so I did...I filled out the "BOOK" of papework....and was denied the first time, so I got an attorney and was approved this past September... I got a check for my SSD back several months of the previous year, cause it retroactive they go back like 6 month after your disability started...... but BEWARE!!!!!! most of your short term and long term disability companies expect you to pay them back what they have paid you after you are approved for SS... I had to pay back over $5000 to my Long Term Disability Company once SS Approved me.... I got the check, paid my attorney and had to pay back LTD......I would advise you to check you STD policy.... also I went from over $1100 a month with LTD to $630 a month on SSD.... Best of Luck to ya! TRose |
