Any women are members of this gym? I was thinking about joining.

I was a member two years back, and my sister-in-law is now a member.

It's not intense. It's very laid back, gets your heart pumping, with very light/mild strength training. The ones in my neck of the woods are very strict about no men. It's not like a regular gym where sometimes you get the feeling that it's a pickup joint. The ladies who attended mine were all in their 40's through 60's and just wanted to lose weight, not really tone up and build a lot of muscle. They were extremely pleasant...no intimidation factor whatsoever.

My only complaint was my Curves was adamant about automatically deducting my membership fee monthly from my checking account. I don't subscribe to having any fees taken out of my checking account automatically. I offered and they agreed to my paying the entire year's membership fee in advance at the time I signed up. Well, the franchise owner here took my check for the entire year, and then she still deducted the monthly fee for the first couple months. It was a giant headache to get my couple months' worth of fees refunded. Things got a little nasty, words were said by both of us, and it just became a little awkward to go back. Plus, the lady franchise owner here was the sister of one of the judges I work with regularly, so then I really felt I should just cut my ties with Curves.

If it weren't for that, I'd probably still be a member.

Good luck!

:bouncing: Rip off report.com has a lot of complaints about this company from all over. I was going to join them and looked em up decided not to. Found another way to exercise without costing a dime...drop kids off at school and then joined a walking group. Can't walk now because of the cold weather, but I will get back to it. Also go to complaints.com. Its sad that we have to check up on companies like that, but its buyer beware and we are lucky to have this medium to protect our dollors. Ya know?

I am currently a member at curvers. I will not be renewing my membership when my year is up. It is mostly all strength training... so if you are really looking to shed pounds, this is not the way to do it. And plus I like to be left alone when i'm working out, but at curves they play all kinds of games that makes you get involved. I wanted to join a gym not a social club.

Hi my name is Tori. I was very dissapointed to hear the response about Curves. I started working out there 3 years ago after my daughter was born. Then a year later was hired on there. I have loved it and got tremendous support. And our Curves lets you chose between check draft and monthly payments. And we do not play games in less it is requested, and just recently we started weight loss challenge classes, simular to weight watchers. I hate to hear that these other ladies had such bad experiences with the program, but all Curves are different.

I joined a gym called Lady of America and it was really nice. I know they are privatly owned but you could do whatever you wanted in there from classes to tanning and weights. They even had free daycare and was only $29 a month. I knew I could do all the things I was doing there at home but of course I didn't. It was more motivation. I knew when I walked through those doors I was going to tuff it out and work. I did lose 15 pounds in a year and would have lost more if I could give up Mountain Dews. What is the boot camp?

Hi, Tori

I hope others realize they're all individually run. The next closest Curves to me (about an hour away), everyone raves about. I truly loved the atmosphere of Curves, so much different than the Y or a traditional gym. Like I said, I'd probably still be a member if it weren't for the billing issue, which can happen with any company -- dealing with cable right now wanting to get me to pay automatically out of my checking account, offering me all sorts of discounts if I do, which they won't give me the fabulous deals if I don't sign up for automatic draft...grr!

Boot Camp - It's an intense workout (equivalent to an army bootcamp) for about six weeks. Gives you a jumpstart!

I think I might join curves if I can pay cash monthly. I can not have them messing up my debit's. I went to that complaint site, and that was the same complaint...one lady said they need to replace the pads because she developed some type of disease that messed up her feet.

I liked curves because it was all women and older ones too, but the hours were too limited.

Hi everyone,

I joined Curves last year because it is endorsed by the Fibromyalgia Assocation. I have FM and was interested in being able to work out at an FM-friendly place. I was able to do the Curves circuit for a couple of months, but them it got to be too much. I spoke to the manager about this and told her I would have to cancel my membership. They did everything they could to convince me to stay - stay and do something that was not good for me or my aching body! I had to be quite forceful with them about cancelling my membership until they finally realized I wouldn't back down. I also had the automatic deduction option (which was cheaper - even though I wanted to pay by check on a monthly basis) so I had to make sure they didn't deduct any more from my checking account.

As another member here stated, they are all independantly owned and operate differently. This was probably an isolated issue. They are a very successful company, so they must be doing something right! It just wasn't for me.

God bless, Jen

Just started my third year at Curves; obviously I really like it.

I've lost 50 pounds and tons of inches (like 43-44). The Curves workout will firm you up but, as was pointed out up-thread, won't take many/any pounds off. You need to cut calories to get significant weight loss.

Because they are independently owned, some Curves are better than others. I chose to pay a year's fee upfront, and they gave me a 10% discount, so it works out to about $35/month. You can play games if you want to, skip them if you want to, socialize if you want to, etc. You get the picture.

It's a safe atmosphere - no pick-ups, lol. There was some controversy about a year ago about the founder, Gary Heavin (a Christian) and who/where he made contributions. I am struggling with this. Those Gary has said that he doesn't give to anti-abortion places per se, I do believe he contributes to very conservative organizations that promote abstenence rather than abortion or birth control. You have to make your choices - and this was a tough one for me.
