My daughter is 12 years old and 5'2. She looks fine but she says she sucks it in, looking only 90 or so. We weighed her and she is 160lb. Today she only had 1087 calories.(She keeps a record.) How much calories should she be eating a day and what exercises should she do? (She's begging for a treadmill.)

1087 is too low, the minimum should be at least around 1600. And as for exercise, basically anything that she enjoys doing that burns calories is good.

160 is overweight for someone 5'2". For someone 5'2" a weight of 101 - 136 is okay, maybe a little bit more or less. I am, in fact, the same height as her and only a year older. :)

Remind her that being on a 1000 calorie diet is very unhealthy! :nono: She should at least have a intake of 1500. In fact, if you don't eat right it can cause your body to acctually gain weight.

I myself am going to a women's health club called Curves ( see curves.com) to loose a little bit of weight. You should be glad she doesn't want to be unhealthy and she wants to excersize. If you can't afford a treadmill, encourage her to run. Also tell her to drink plenty of water.

=) I hope I was able to help! Good luck! <3

Since she is only 12 and still growing, you should probably consult her doctor about an appropriate weight loss strategy for her. Of course, it will involve exercise and eating lots of fruits and veggies and stuff. But you should check with the doctor to see how much she should be eating and exercising and what an appropriate rate of weight loss would be.

Hi I don't think you should be making a fuss about what your daughter is weighing because you could lead her onto a eating disorder.
She is only 12 and has a fair bit of growing to do.
I'm sad to hear she is keeping a diary of her calories.

If your really worried about her weight then you should re think your lifestyle.
It's not a diet it's your lifestyle.
Everybody in the house should be eating healthy. keep lots of fruit in the house for snacking and cook some great heathly meals.
How about you guys exercise together eg Tennis, swimming at the pool, exercise class together at your local gym, bush walking.
But please don't make a big deal over her weight.

Goodluck with everthing

It's good to hear that you're trying to work with your daughter on this. It kinda worries me that at 12 she's already keeping track of her calories. Keep a close eye on this, because I know from personal experience that it can sometimes turn into an obsession (aka an eating disorder). Instead of tracking every single calorie, encourage a balanced diet and regular exercise. Maybe the two of you could benefit from taking a nutrition class somewhere? And as far as the exercise goes, encourage her to do something fun! Try taking walks together in the evening, you'll both get exercise and you'll have some extra bonding time too!
