Ok..I am low in ferratin iron (level 7). So what type of iron should i buy? I've noticed there are so many. I just bought some ferrous sulfate so I hope that is the right kind? I am in the US and can't get a prescription..it's complicated....

You should be ok with that. Try taking it with orange or fruit juice (vitamin c helps to absorb iron) and avoid tea, dairy, wine and carbonated drinks.
Some people find that it can cause stomach issues ie constipation, upset tummy etc. (just so your aware if any problems occur).
Also try to eat plenty of iron enriched foods like brocoli, spinach, red meats etc.
Good luck

I don't like Iron sulfate as an Iron supplement because it constipates me. Also, sulfates is inorganic and have to be changed so much by your digestive system for absorption.

I like and use the chelated type put out by Solgar (when I need iron) that is easier to absorb. The iron is bonded to a protein amino acid -- glycinate and proteins are just more readily absorbed and does not constipate!
The process is patented and made by Albion Labs and sells it to many manufacturers.

One tablet of iron can cause my stomach ache for one whole month. Not worse to take it?

Ferrous sulphate goes through me like a high speed train.

What does it mean? Heart is racing like a train? I used to tell my Dr my heart is like a train. It is either an "express train" or "train stopped all stations"! Now I wander it was caused by "Ferrous sulphate"?

Thanks for that.

Katie 2005,
you don't have to eat Iron via supplements....eat red meats, and vegies...like steam some broccoli or something, eat more fruits...etc....eat the foods that you enjoy....with something different...each time.

I used to worry about my iron intake too.
I later found out, that I had anemia because I have mild lupus, and mild fibromyalgia! But, I still love to eat broccoli! Just enjoy eating vegies and fruit...and you can also look up Iron fortified foods on the net, and or ask your doctors as well. Also, think PrUnE JuIcE!!! and or PrUnEs!!! They are kind of delicious ...it's just the thought of them, that scares everybody...but, they are pretty good!

there are lists on the net that you can print out...regarding Iron intake, calcium, carbs, etc.... I sometimes like to get prints of those too! ;)

good luck...and don't worry about supplements....you CAN enjoy foods, without having to take the "dull" stuff!

p.s. also look in a nutrition or simple cookbook. They have some good ones that explain stuff....i.e. "Low Fat cooking", and or Jane Brody's good food cookbook(you may have to search in the used book stores, but, it's worth it, she has a really good book!)also..she does happen to have a book called Jane Brody's gourmet food cookbook...or something like that...and that is also a great book as well!
The first book I mentioned, though, on page 419 there is a really delicious chicken enchilada recipe that I would highly recommend.(I used to give this book for gifts!)

oh, and if you want to eat more vegies....the Moosewood cookbook...and anything by Mollie Katzen...she does recipes with a lot of vegies...all VERY good for you! :bouncing: :bouncing: :)

Just wanted to share...hope this helps!

Sorry Pika, What I meant was that it gives me terrible diahhrea, BUT the heart sensations I DO get, I just thought it was a symptom of anemia.
Sorry for any confusion.

The local Dr said "Don't want me to take an iron tablet anymore. It is useless. Once I'm not taking, it back to low again" He said that he wants to find out where I have a bleed? Pushing too hard :(

I am anemic also too, and live in the U.S. I would recommend that you take a supplement called Floradix Iron, it's in a liquid form, sao it is easy to digest and it is made primarily fdrom vegtable sources, which arer m,ost eaasily used by your body, alot of natural medicine docs reccomend it, it is the best, you can get it at any health food store, probably.
Also, eat alot of greens and good veggies,

Katie,
When I was anemic, I took Slow FE. I got it over the counter. It slowly releases into your system so there isn't as many side effects. I never had any side effects. I took 3 a day (one every 4 hours with OJ & vitamin C).

I did notice that my bm's were black which according to my doctor was ok.

Hope this helps. :)

I am using an iron chelate too, by nature sunshine, just started it yesterday, was using robust molasses it has 20 percent of the daily requirement of iron in only one tablespoon. was taking three or four each day.

it is by grandma's but I am sure you can find it under any brand that happens to be in your area just check the labels. so far no constipation but only started it yesterday.

I just started on my iron supplementation so have a few months before I know if it will help me or not.

After going through about a million forms of iron under the watchful eye of my hematologist, we finally hit upon ferrous sulfate as the one type that I seem to absorb with success (nothing else produced any noticeable changes in my iron levels).

I hate it, though...it makes my stomach hurt (probably because I have to take it on a totally empty stomach, and with citrus or tomato juice, no less, or I won't absorb it), it constipates me, gives me black crap, and acid reflux. But I guess it's preferable to being dizzy and feeling like climbing the stairs makes me wanna take a four hour nap, eh?

lindsalou - you mention you take infusions now?? Is that like an injection? Sorry if this is a stupid question. I have an iron deficiency, but cannot take the tablets, and am stuck at the moment as to how I can correct this.
