I have had increasing facial hair lately (age 51); mostly in chin area. I pluck the thick ones and sometimes I use Nair for face. I have always suffered with acne, now facial hair. And the dark circles under my eyes is driving me crazy. Any ideas?

Denise, I feel your pain. I have a fear I'll lose my mind and end up in a nusing home where I will grow a beard. Yikes!!! Electrolysis works. It can be costly but after multiple treatments, those little buggers stay gone.
The dark circles may be a sign of allergies. Have you always had them or is this a new development?
Best wishes! :)

Laser works faster, although is more expensive.
The dark circles often get worse as we age, due to skin becoming thinner.
Oh, the joys of ageing!

Same chin hair problem. Lots of electrolysis treatments didn't help and new ones keep sprouting all the time. Seems like they grow from zero to 60 in an hour. I keep tweezers in my purse at all times. Isn't this fun?

Can you imagine when the prehistoric women had hair all over their body. Everyone had sex anyways...

I wish evolution completely got rid of female "facial hair" rather than leaving a few little specs every so often.

They say that every part of the human body serves a purpose, you know, like the hair in our nose is supposed to catch particles in the air and prevent them from being inhaled into our lungs?
Maybe we get hair on our chins when we get older so there is something there to catch the food that dribbles out of our mouths ... LOL
Hmmmm, maybe if I didn't pluck the hairs out of my chin my blouse wouldn't get as many food stains on it. I swear, the older I get the more food doesn't make it all the way into my mouth.
My daughter asked me once if my chest was a food magnet! I told her 'No honey, it's not my chest, it's the d*mn blouse! LOL

May I ask how old you ladies were when the chin hair started? And does the removal (either elect or laser) work only if the hairs are black?

I believe that even women tend to grow some facial hair, but it's much less than men, right? So it seems this should be much easier to take care of if you get one of those wipe away products (sorta like Stridex pads) you see on TV. And btw, anybody know where to get those?

LLTL - as to when the chin hair started, mine started in my 40's (I'm 56 now). At first I had only 3 or 4 in one spot on my chin and had electrolysis for those. Didn't work, and more kept sprouting in the same area. Thought I was keeping up with the plucking, and then this past weekend I stayed in a hotel where they had one of those lighted magnifying mirrors. Ohmygawd! There were about 30 that I'd been missing all along because they weren't stubble. Now I'm mortified that I've had a beard all along and didn't know it.

Hello all...Bevery wary of hormone replacement as it can raise testosorone levels and therefore you get hairy. Plucking can leave hair bumps. Nair burns the skin. I shave off the strays every day...no problems and i use baby lotion and it works wonders...

I've always had a mustach. I've been shaving it once a week. Now I get a long hair here and there on my chin that I shave off when it gets too long maybe once a month.

Hi all -- this thread has made me laugh! Some of these aging threads are depressing and/or sad, but let's face it (pun intended!), we're all dealing with this issue as we get older and it's kinda funny! Like many of you, I never leave home without tweezers in my purse. I'm intrigued by what I'm hearing about laser treatments and plan to look into that. Nair is good for the soft, longer hair that's appearing on the side of my face, but doesn't work on those true "whiskers" that are appearing on my chin. I think we all fear the nightmare scenario of being old and incompetent in some nursing home where no one is attending to our whiskers!

As women age the hormone E/T ratio gets out of balance. The body sees low estrogen & high testosterone, so it say grow more hair for this guy.
As men age the hormone T/E ratio gets out of balance. The body sees low testosterone & high estrogen, so it says grow breast for this gal.

I have had laser and it worked very well on the dark ones. Now I have white ones, which laser will not work on, so I will have to find an electrologist for those.

Gosh, I've had hairs for as long as I can remember...a teenager! At 43, they are no worse than they ever were. Over years of waxing and tweezing, they have actually lessened. Really...this is such a common problem...it's just that women are embarrased to say it so we all think we are alone...we are not alone! All of my sisters and friends have them...I asked the doctor about them and he said that unless I had it really thick, they're just normal to have. Yes, it's embarrassing but don't think you are abnormal or gross to have these! I've heard that waxing the upper lip can cause us wrinking there but I have a feeling that's just a myth and it's more likely heredity or from smoking.

Try a combination of treatments...I'm 80 going on 60 and have had facial hair since my physician cut off my estrogen. The facial hair is just one more thing to deal with in the senior years! A few hints...use the Nair exactly as directed, rinse thoroughly and then gently apply a good moisterizer. Get a good bathroom magnifying mirror and check your face at least weekly for unsightly hair growth. Attack the hair before it gets too long and you will stay ahead of the game, always look presentable and not need to use those tweezers as often. Also, my beautician advised me to use a bikini razor for facial hair removal. It is much easier to use on the face than a full sized razor. Good luck Denise

The facial hair I'm referring to is coarse chin hair, and Nair will not do anything for it. Only laser or electrolyosis will get rid of it. Shaving, waxing or plucking is the only alternative for me. I don't have any soft, light facial hair anywhere.
And, since waxing and plucking pulls hair out at the roots, it causes dark pigmentation from injury to the hair root over a peroid of time. I stopped plucking over a year ago, and at least the dark shadowy pigmentation is now gone. So if I start that up again, the pigmentation will return. A catch 22 situation. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Since I did have laser and it got rid of the dark hair, the white or gray ones that are there will have to have electrolyosis to be removed, as laser won't work on light colored hair.

Hi all,
Had to smile at this topic. I too have loads of chin hair. Thought i would clear something up for you. It's not that we are growing hair, it has always been there, but thin and soft and completely unnoticeable. What happens is, as we age the hair changes texture (folicles have always been there and we dont make folicles) Anyway, when they are removed by electrolosis, they do go, the ones that come afterwards are just the thin fines hairs changing texture. Hope this helps.

Hey Smart. I am 26, also, and had the same problem a couple of years ago. I would probably still be as frustrated as you are if I had not gotten yag laser hair removal. It's great! They have you shave the areas they are treating before you come in for you treatment so you don't have to worry about growing out your hair to a quarter of an inch like you do with some treatments. The red bumps on my chin are gone and the black hairs have been replaced by light practically invisible hairs. I have had 6 or 7 treatments each costing $150 (they treated chin, sideburns, and upper lip for this price) which I know sounds like a lot of money. To me it was worth every penny because I feel a lot better about myself and I do not have to worry about plucking my chin hairs anymore. Good luck with finding something that works for you!

Well, I'm 27 and i too, have whiskers AND a stash . . . and let me say something to you ladies . . . I too have the little critters on my chin, and a tash too.
I have tried nair but like some of the other posters it burns me. I have tried waxing but get little boils all over the area.
i tweeze the bristley ones out but have discovered this thing called silky mitt (99p superdrug in uk) for my tash and the fine downy hair on my cheeks. i use it on my legs in between shaves as it gets rid of the sharp ends on the stubble.
its like a very fine sanding paper and it works a treat, no redness or spots and doesnt leave that false bare area either. its great for exfoliating too.
The dark circles under the eyes can indicate dehydration so maybe you need to up your fluid intake. I have heard that pile cream can reduce the darkness too (apparently supermodels do this)

Vitagen -- love your response! I think about that kind of stuff too -- we "modern" people obsess about the occasional whisker, when prehistoric people had so much more to worry about!
But, as a modern female, I must admit that I worry along with the rest of my sisters. My opinion: Even electrolosis isn't permanent; we'll all end up some day in a nursing home with untended whiskers. In the meantime, I use facial Nair for the downy fuzz on my jawline -- those tough whiskers on my chin I just pluck.

Hello everyone: Not sure if age is a good indicator. Everybody is different. Me, I had a partial hysterectomy at 25, so no period problems to detect Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Not until I was over 55 did anything happen and hair on face began. So maybe some of the posters here might check out if they have PCOS. Keep your sense of humor, without it I believe there is a tendency to become a lunatic.

I am another chin hair plucker and I have a fear of it getting worse. To back up I had a total hysterectomy when I was 23 and am now 58. I took hormones for 34 years. Despite that have had the chin hairs a bit of a mustache for years. Not sure when it started maybe around 50. I stopped taking the hormones a year ago. I might have a few more chin hairs since then but not sure. My hair right on the top front is thinning. I jokingly say that it disappeared from there and went to my chin. Another odd thing is that I haven 't had to shave my legs for many years. My leg hairs disappeared. I think they all went to my chin too. I am constantly plucking and then get a few of the red bumps. I am sensitive to different things so don't want to use Nair or try waxing. Anything else is too expensive.

Ya gotta have a sense of humor about aging....I told my daughter that if i was ever in a coma she had to come in and secretly shave my chin every day. I know it sounds awfull, but I shave my chin every morning in the shower. I was thinking about having it waxed ,but haven't tried it yet. I'm 54 and have been shaving my chin for the last 10yrs or so.

I guess I need a sense of humor. I worry about it more than I think it is funny. LOL I haven't done the shaving thing for fear that it would get worse. I started shaving my neck years ago and now have to keep doing that. I have short hair so started doing that. My chin hairs are below my chin in the double chin area that I have.

It sound to me like your only answer is to keep shaving it...if plucking doesn't work and waxing won't work for you and DO NOT try Nair if you are sensitive because I've seen it burn the heck out of people!!!!! Shaving does not make there be more hair...of course it will be a blunt stubbly hair that grows back but if the hair is getting thicker it's NOT from the shaving of it. The only thing to make it stop coming back is the laser hair removal and you say that's too expensive so really shaving is the only thing that's left.

The shaving I was referring to was the back of my neck. Because I know how that works, I don't want to start shaving my chin or under it. I have seen women who have have gray in that are, or mustaches or side burns and I know they are shaving. I don't want to look like that.
Sorry this is late. I posted reply to this the other day and came back and it never showed up.

Seems like something Ponce De Leon. I am so afraid of shaving and having that gray area under my chin that would make it obvious I am shaving. I have that on the back of my neck. I guess it is better to have a few red areas. Does makeup cover the gray area up if you have it? I don't put makeup that far down. It sure is a bummer getting older.

Ladies,
Hi. I am new here, but I just have to respond to this thread.
I am 50 and for the past several years I have had to remove
facial hair also. hair can grow down my back and I don't care
but my face??????forget it...
Anyway there used to be an implement called' 'epilady'.
Does anyone have experience with it? It is a 'shaver'
that just mass plucks hair. Anyway I had a French girlfriend
(college roomie) and she had a contraption from Europe
like the epilady. She used it on her legs. She only had
to do this once EVERY SIX MONTHS!!!!! After a while, plucking
destroys the root...and no more hair.
By the way...and this is no spam...but if anyone wants to ever
talk to me about aging skin...I know some things about
very good products.
God bless!

Aaah - the Epilady! I actually had one of these. It was the most painful thing ever. You stroked it along your legs and it would rip out the hair by the roots. Left little spots of blood all over my legs.
If I still had it, I would certainly try it on my chin hairs, because I don't think it would hurt as much there.

I hope I'm doing this right; rather new here. I didn't have any hair on my face/chin until after I was put on HRT for about 3-4 years. I can't say that's what caused it but I can't think of anything else. I finally quit taking the HRT but unfortunately, the hair is still there but very light and soft. You can only see it if I turn a certain way toward the light.
I hope this will help some; also may be useful to research it.

wow I felt like I was writing this myself. Ia m 27 and have been dealing with this for about 3-4 years now.. some of them are not even attached to a root like they just come out if you squeeze like a pimple I tried about 3 treatments of electrolysis and it really made no difference.. I use tweazers daily and like you most of them get trapped under the skin I have to dig them out before they get infected and I permanently have marked my china nd neck area :( it strated with me when my husband was diagnosed with low testosterone and he used a cream on his shoulder apparently his shirt on his shoulder must of stayed up while we were asleep and I must of had contact with it asI hear that could have caused it as well as my hormones,,, my hairs are dark and thick it sucks.. I am considering lazer next but I am trying to loose some weight first and see if it helps!

Hi loana0320: Might not be a part of your problem, but check your meat, poultry & fish. Meat, is fed hormones to make them grow faster & meatier and antibiotics to prevent infections. Fish that is farmed, and Cod is the only fish
that cannot be farmed because it is a very deep water fish, so while in the fish pens they are also given antibiotics etc or else they develop infections and who knows what else because they are so crowded together. Chickens also the same for hormones & antibiotics. Which means the chicken eggs also
have those substances in them. Getting those things in your food puts extra
hormones in the body and antibiotics you do not need. So check labels, call
the phone numbers of the producers & ask questions. I have heard that "they" do not know why girls are developing & starting periods in early
grade school and some boys in grade school start developing breasts. How
about getting hormones from lots of "healthy" chicken meat etc. Touted as
healthier than beef, so eat more chicken. They don't know? Want to bet!
Look at the packaging. Farms that have stopped using the drugs are now
putting hormone free, antibiotic free on the package labels and those are what I look for. Also, a few years ago I bought some eggs labeled cage free, drug free chickens & my son asked if I could only buy those from now on. They tasted so much better. So that is what I buy now.
Also, a young woman my son works with was diagnosed with MS and her
doctor told her that if she wanted to stay as good as she could from now on she was to only buy her food from a store that was organic, or mostly organic food. Any food not totally organic would be healthier than in a regular grocery store. I read an article that tomatoes were tested in a lab. They discovered traces of 19 pesticides in the tomatoes.
The USA is regulated for kinds & amounts of pesticides. However, lots of our food is brought in from other counties that have no such regulations.
So eating as healthy as we can is to our advantage. The hair on my chinny
chin chin is not nearly as thick or dark as it was awhile ago. Thank goodness.
God bless you & good luck.

plucking was too painful to me so I just start shaving my chin once a week. I've always had a mustach that I shaved every week, now I've just added the chin.
I just came across this posting.
Facial hair never seemed a big issue. Usual Nair would work.
But then it aggravated some rashes, and seemed to work only with a new fresh product.
Then it seemed quickest, a flick of a ladies razor for chin hair.
And all this was OK for YEARS...until I had some extensive dental surgery.
And even then it was OK.
But then, I experienced some dental fungal infection.
And then other speculation IS about chin hair removal ( especially from the chin underside )
Whether a razor is now aggravating matters worse.
Whether razors might be getting tainted with some fungal mold spores.
