My 19 month old has a very stuffy nose and he doesn't know how to blow it!! I can hear all the congestion, yet it won't drain. I have tried one of those suction things, but whe I lay him down the congestion must move, because it is impossible to get anything from it.
I don't want to give him any over the counter drugs. Does anyone have a natural remedy that may get his congested sinuses to drain?
Thanks!

Hi
My son went through the same thing and he was also getting ear infections all the time. He used to cough until he was sick and his nose would not run, it was all in the top of his nose and the back of his throat. He could not work out how to blow his nose but after a year of hell we saw an allergy specialist and they determind it was an intolerence to cows milk. We took him off all cows dairy products and put him on goats milk, his nose and throat drained down and his symptons completely disappeared. We now let him have just a little milk but not every day and he is still on goats milk for breakfast and we are 12 years on and doing well!
Hope this is helpful

Saline drops -- just regular nasal saline spray or there some an aerosol called simply saline. Just put a few drops down his nose or spray it up there. Won't like it, but it'll help get some of that crud out. DS has had sinus issues since he was a few weeks old. We also use the dreaded bulb syringe and suction some of that gunk out. Again, they're not too thrilled about the whole thing.
We just discovered the simply saline and it's a LOT easier to administer 'cuz DS really really dislikes the regular saline spray.
We also try to give him two baths a day -- one at night before bed and one in the morning. We really steam up the bathroom and then get his bath ready. Gets things moving. I don't use a humidifier 'cuz I've heard those can grow mold.

i know it kinda sounds mean, but when we needed our kids to blow and they couldn't, i'd put pepper in my hand and get them to sniff it. It would always make them sneeze it out

I remember reading a while back that blowing the nose isn't always a good thing and that a little suctioning, or a warm washcloth is good. Something about forcing mucos back deeper into the sinus cavity. So though it can help clean out the immediate area, it isn't really necessary. My kids never blow their noses. Can't get them to do it. I just use a damp washcloth and that works great!
