Has anyone ever had a med quit working once it built up in your system? I had great results with Seroquel for anxiety for a couple of weeks, then it stopped working on the anxiety and just left me flat/depressed/tired. Does anyone have any idea why this happens or how to fix it? It sure is frustrating!

Hi rainbow. I can pitch in a couple of things that have happened to me. They take place roughly in the early 1990's or so. I took Zoloft (50mgs) for 5 years. It worked great for me till shortly before that. Then depression was back in full swing. I have tried about 18-20 AD's through the years and nothing works. Of course on some I had to quit taking because of side effects.

And years later I tried Zoloft again and I increased the dosage up to 200mgs gradually, but it didn't work, no change! Back then I used to take Buspar for anxiety, and it worked great. I remember years later I tried it again, and to my amazement, it did absolutely nothing. I even increased the dosage. Nope! No go!

I think it has to be your body chemistry that can change after years and what used to work then, doesn't now. That is just my case though. By the way, I am now taking Clonazepam (1mg) of an evening to help me sleep. Yes, it does work fine for me. I don't know how long I will stay on it. Take care. Kevin

Hi Rainbow. That happened to me with lithium. I was taking it for about 3 years when whammo...deep, deep depression hit and I went off the meds completely. When I started up the lithium again, I couldn't even keep it in....something in my body was telling me "no way"...so I'm on depakote (for now).

Hugs, Mom

Maybe all you need is a dose increase?! Ask your Dr about that before you try and switch! I was on paxil for 4 years and it stopped working, but I can't see a med stopping that soon,in my non-medical opinion it just needs to be increased! take care!

Thats a typical reaction of any med from the class of seroquel. Seroquel is mostly used as an anti-psychotic, but it can be used for anxiety or as an anti-maniac agent. However you'll get used to it and the effect will be lost. Maybe its time to change meds... there are many others out there.

i was on prozac for almost thirteen years; my new internist suggested that i switch to zoloft as she had her doubts that prozac was "working" anymore. i had no trouble switching and i think i feel better than on the prozac. i guess they can stop working.

i have been on seroquel for a year now and i got use to it so what i would do is take 23 mg one day then the next 50mg then the next 75mg then 100mg...then stop for one day and then continue with 25-50-75-100.....it worked for me..you may want to try goinging higher...if you feel anxious coming from 100 to 0 try 100 to 25 mg....or whatever doasge you are at now....take care!

I think kristis2 has a good point, because something similar happened to me with Effexor. When I was on 300 mg/day back in '97 I wound up still needing ECT, but now that I am on 450/day I feel fine. One other thing is, if no meds are working sometimes ECT will 'snap you out of it', then if you can get on the right med(s) quickly enough they will take over.

I was on Paxil for 2 yrs then it quit working. It just means you built up a tolerance and you need to switch to something else. It's hard though with all the side effects, it's kind of scary to switch to anohter med, I just ended up taking an antianxiety med instead.
