I turned 18 last month, I live in Germany, my parents work for the miltary. Last night at around 3 am I was taking a shower and I noticed the top of my foot had gone numb. Its been 24 hours and theres no change. I have problems sleeping and take Tylenol PM every night. I smoke and rarely ever drink. I just really want to know whats going on and dread any long term affects.

It sounds like a circulation problem. Since it was a one off its most likely nothing serious.

I suffer from numb hands, lower legs and feet and this cold weather certainly doesn't help. The best thing to do is eep rubbing your foot till you can feel yourself touching it, or put a hot water bottle on your foot to warm it up. Not too hot though...just luke warm because your foot is numb you can feel how hot something is and can burn yourself because of this.

Also put on 3 pairs of socks and keep away from cold areas and try to sit as close to the fire as possible. Once your foot heats up you will regain feeling and it should be ok.

However if your foot goes black or a very dark colour then go to the hospital. If it isnt better in a few hours, ring your doctor for advice.

Hello young man,
It sounds like you need to see a doctor. Don't be afraid, it may just be a minor problem and I can't give you too much info because I will get bleeped from this. There are a few things it could be aside from circulation, it may be along the lines of neuropathy. A doctor can tell you and also check out natural things to do for this and please be careful of the drugs they may prescribe. Good luck to you. Sue

Im sorry but I was only trying to explain this based on personal experience. When it happens in my feet, they become cold, change colour, I cant feel a thing and it does look like my limb has fell asleep and there is no bones in my foot because it becomes that floppy.

I was considering a circulation problem because the wether is freezing and cold weather can affect blood flow and make it sluggish. What colour is the top of your foot? The part where its "dead".

Has the affected area changed colour in any way at all? If it has, what colour?

A limb feeling like its fallen asleep can be circulation related. That is all I was trying to say John. I understand how you feel as this happens to me daily on a wider scale because I have Raynauds.

That is when mine starts in my legs. Have you dropped something on your foot? Can you force move it? (bend your toes by using your hand...keep doing this it may help)

though it is quite cold in Germany right now. how long should this loss of feeling last if its a circulator problem

It varies in everyone unfortunately. During a bad circulation episode it can last several days to a few hours or even a few minutes. Because yours has been like this for 24hrs its probably going to last another day or two. Im guessing this is unusual for you so I would see your doctor about it.

About a year ago the top of my left foot and up halfway up the front of my shin went numb. I was too scared to go to a Dr. but I did research online and diagnosed myself as having a pinched nerve. The numbness subsided in about a month and all has been well since. I'm not saying that was the bet course of action, but don't completely freak yourself out just yet if you have no immediate plans to visit the Dr.
