I had some xrays taken the other day, and my dentist said that I had a piece of nerve left from a route canal I had done about 15 years ago. He wants me to see a specialist because it could be a potential problem that might require major surgery, he says.
Did the dentist who did that root canal screw up by leaving that last piece of nerve there?
Sorry, I think the title should read r-o-o-t canal. thanks for looking.

Hi! If it is not painful then leave it alone!Nerve cant be seen on the Xray; it must be just a little empty space. It can cause problems later but if it is not then leave it till it stars to hurt -which may not be till another feww years...
hmmm...maybe it's a piece of root then. I forgot exactly. I can see something on the x ray, but I don't know what. It looks like a little piece of sliver or something at the base of the canal.

I've had 5 root canals..all were fine until my last one about 3 years ago. I believe nerve was left in mine too. It aches all the time...not bad, but enough that I know it's there. I went back to the dentist..I must explain that I have reactions to local anesthetics..so what they use is a local that works fast...does not effect me, but also does not numb too well or last very long.
When getting this root canal I felt the whole thing...I literally kicked and screamed the entire time. I could not stand it...the dentist said it looked fine, but always felt senitivity and achiness.
Went to a specialist...he re-did the root canal...said it would take 2 visits...took 4 for me.. no matter how much local I recieved i still felt it..he even numbed my gum drilled a whole into the bone and stuck the needle in there several times and I still felt jolts when cleaning out the nerve. He said there was no infection..but still put medication inside the tooth.
He said that it looked good on whatever machine they look at...and should takes about 3-4 months for pain to go away...that was over a year ago...it still aches the same way...Ihave spent a fortune on this one tooth..the specialst charged $1200...my insurance paid $800.
I'm going back to the dentist again and complain when I get my teeth cleaned...surgery is the only other alternative...short of having it pulled..I've had it before or my front lower teeth that were injured...became absess and had a botched root canal...I did not like it, but it worked...then I had no reaction to locals, now that I have reactions and can feel pain it causes me stress and anxiety too.
That was tough to read. By that I mean tough situation. I hope things work out for you.
