hi! constipation is one of my many problems too. i was just wondering, WHAT are enemas... HOW they are done... and WHY are they so popular?

i have acne, and im constipated. i think they're somehow related, right? i've read many books that say so. and im toying with the idea of having enemas.

will they really help in constipation? will they help with acne? or will they make me breakout even more?

if anybody could give some info about this... it would be appreciated.

thanks!

An enema is also a drug that is used in the same way ie it is administered the same way. However this version is used to stimulate the rectum into emptying its contents or to soften the faeces. For exapmle - I had a phosphate enema as prep for my colectomy operation.

Also on here people talk about barium enemas - this a procedure where they visualise your large colon through fluoroscopy (real time xrays). They insert a tube and put a substance called barium into your bowel, it coats your bowel, air is also pumped in and as barium is radiopaque (shows on xrays) they can see your bowel.

When I first started giving myself an enema I found that it gave me an unwanted erection which was rather a nuisance when I wanted to expel on the toilet.

what are the side effects of enemas? i'm scared of having one because it might make my problem even worse. :( i'm planning on doing a bowel cleanse, but after reading so many articles, i feel like it's so complicated and i honestly don't know where to start! also, if i do it wrong, i might turn out worse. help!

If you're having a lot of problems with moving your bowels and it has gone on for a time, a bowel cleanse might help a lot. However, rather than spend all those dollars on the various "colon cleanse" products that are out there, take a series of large volume enemas. It does the job just as well, you know when you will evacuate and it's cheap. However, if you do a series of enemas be sure to use a tablespoon of salt (or baking soda) per quart of water. That helps to keep the electrolytes in balance. Some people claim that enemas can be habit forming but I seriously doubt it, as long as you aren't using them to solely promote regular bowel movements.
