I'm a 21 yr old male, have had cold sores since I was a kid, but usually when it was winter time or when I was really sick, yet they where rare. Now as I am getting older, I notice they become more frequent. Doc has put me on Valtrex (sp) to take twice daily 1000 mg pills, but they dont work for me. I use abreva almost every day and night and when a cold sore comes up, I pretty load the part of my lip up with cream.

Is there anything OTC meds or vitamins or so that can help in the aid of curing up a sore faster as well as preventing future out breaks?

Could I also spread a core sore to someone I kiss on the lips even if I do not have a sore present or havnt had one present for quite some time?

Same question as above, but performing oral sex on a woman. Could I spread anything to her when I do not have a cold sore present?

Why are my cold sores so frequent at times? I noticed that times when I drink/eat fruits with citric acid in them or something greasy does me in, or if im under alot of stress/depression or really sick.

I just want to know more about this, how to prevent future cold sores, and how to cure it up quicker.

Anyone like to share some thoughts or ideas on things that have worked for them?

Thanks in advance guys.

I use standard peroxide for genital herpes and given the fact a cold sore is a herpe it may be worth a try. I soak a q-tip in the peroxide and dab it on. It really helps to speed the healing process.

hi, I have only had one ob that I assume never diagnosed so not sure how helpful this may be. I use lysine supplements everyday. this can be purchased at duane reade or rite aid. I also use blistex to keep my lips moist so that is it not dry and there is not trauma to the lips..this usually brings on an ob. I also use Herpecin-L this is really good. I put this on before I go to sleep so that don't get an ob. Good luck in your...happy ob free!

To answer one of your original questions - yes you can spread it through both kissing and oral sex if the virus is active in your mouth. Right now, statistics indicate that the fastest growing population of herpes transmissions are those who get HSV-1 (cold sores) but in the genital region. Most of these cases were contracted through oral sex.

So, then you probably want to know - when is the virus active? Definetly when a sore is present and possibly a day or two before that and after. Hopefully - since you get them frequently, you can learn the symptoms of them and actually predict, in advance, when an outbreak is coming - so that you can avoid kissing/oral sex during that time frame.

I would dab peroxide on the sore with a Q-tip and then open a garlic gel cap and put the garlic oil on it. I buy the odorless ones at Walmart. This really seems to keep them from getting big and ugly!

so basically when I feel a sore coming on and 2 days after I can't engage in oral sex with my gf. But when no sore is visible and theres no indication of one coming on....is it safe to have oral sex? I don't want to pass this on to my GF...expecially down there. Or should I obtian 100%?

There is a slight risk of you spreading it when you are viral shedding without on OB. Obstain 100%...I can't imagine that as an option. Ya know, it used to be that noone even knew this could be spread from oral to genital so at least you do know this and you can be careful. If it were me in her situation, I would just make good and sure that you didn't had any sign of a sore and also you probably know when one is starting to come up too by a tingling feeling on your lips.
