My 20 year old son was seen by his doctor last Friday, the 6th. His prostate is enlarged. He was given 500mg of Cipro twice a day and 500mg of Indomethacin three times a day all for 10 days and is to go back to check prostate next Wednesday. My question is this. When my son asked why it has happened, he only got one answer, I don't know, it normally only happens in men over 50. Should he go somewhere else and have it checked?
I'm afraid for him. My mom died from cancer that wasn't checked, even with every symptom known for colon cancer and by the time they found it, it was way too late.
Should we be worried about cancer or has anyone else gone through this at such an early age.
I should say that this is the second time he has had problems. The first time it wasn't enlarged. Just blood in his semen and traces in his urine.

TIA

It is very, very rare to see prostate cancer before the age of 50.
Best of luck with your son.

Look, if you are uncomfortable with the results of Doctor #1, then you owe it to your own conscience (considering that you already are worried for him)and to your son to get a second opinion. Whether it is an infection (ie: prostatitis) or something else, then you may want to get a urologist to check him out. Keep us posted. chris

Hello maybe i can give you a little releif, im 31 and diagnosted with a enlarged prostate due to prostatitis, my urologist said its not uncommon."very painful i might add" there are many causes ex, unprotected sex, unclean hands when using restroom, any bacteria that can enter the penis can be the cause, kidney infections ect... im on levaquin for 14 days but cant tolerate the insomnia and anxiety from quinolone antibiotics.he should be better in a few days, tell him to take it easy. best of luck!!

I'm in my 30s and also had a bout of prostatitis last year. Levaquin cleared it right up. Besides the antibiotic my urologist prescribed "more frequent ejaculation" ! That should make your son happy!
