My grandmother is 74 years old and is having recent problems with spikes in BP. In the daytime it is either normal or bordering on low, although her pulse is generally high (90) at times. In the evening, her BP rises and seems to steadily go up. At this time she also has frequent urination. She sometimes gets a pain in the kidney area as well during this. The doctors have no idea what to do....she has been on mild meds for hypertension that affect her greatly to the point of having a BP of 80/57. But, a strong med will not touch it. She is not on any meds at this time. A doctor in ER gave her Ativan and it worked that night. She continues to take this when the BP increases, and this med generally help....though not always. She doesn't feel as if it is anxiety...but we just want to know if anyone has had anything comperable to this happen to them or someone they know. We have pretty much tried everything we can think of. She does not consume salt, has lowered her fat intake, no caffeine. The doctor will not diagnose her as hypertensive.

Have her kidneys been checked?
Have her kidneys been checked?
In all the times she went to ER they never checked that. Thanks for the idea.....could your kidneys cause an attack like that to occur?

Kidney problems have been known to cause BP problems, so it's worth checking it out. Especially since you mentioned pain in the kidney area...

Thyroid problems (hyperthyroid) can cause bp to spike as well. Before my mom was diagnosised with Graves disease her bp was always high. Her doctors couldn't fiogure it out until a dr's assistant asked about the thyroid and ran test.
Why not rule out the thyroid as well.

Kidneys can indeed be a problem and SHOULD have been checked. In my opinion...time to fire a doctor.
My Mother-in-Law 83 years old just went through this. First off she had a Kidney infection. That was easily curable. But BP was still high. She ios also diabetic which was under control but BP still high. Doc wound up putting 2 Stents in to increase BVlood flow to Kidneys. Risky, but worked. Her BP was 190/110 before, now 130/70 after, PLUS she went off 5 different meds!
Beautiful!
Get her kidneys checked, pronto.
Thank you.....we will try that next.....
