Had my primary OB 1.5 years ago...got prescription to clear it up...i didnt take all the meds at that time, saved some, thinking another OB would happen soon...it didnt for 1.5 years...today im having odd feelings down there, thinking it may be the beginning...question is: is it safe to continue using those meds that were prescribed so long ago?? will they be as effective?? (im not sure the exact name of the meds - aclyovair? something like that?)

I'm sure that every drug is different, but I saw a special on Dateline (or one of those shows) a couple of years ago that said that about 90% of all medications do not expire or lose their potency over the years. But that drug companies put on expiration dates to make more money and to prevent people from doing what you are doing. As I mentioned above, I'm sure there are many exceptions to this rule, but for most meds, there really is no problem taking an old medication - it should still work as intended.

I have a friend who has no drug plan and cannt afford the meds, so I gave him an old bottle of Valtrex that I found...approx 16 months old, he used it and it was 100% effective. Dont know if this helps - take care.

They should be ok to take now....I think it takes 'years" for their potency to lessen. Back to that drug co./insurance angle.....Megara, is right about that....unless, we get smarter and don't let them beat us at this great country's game - of prescription meds in conjuction with the health insurance companies...I'd take them and not even think twice.....-shinyOrn

thanks all. after just three pills i no longer have the signs of an outbreak that i had so strongly the last couple days. i totally agree with the first response - i think the drug companies tell you that they go bad just so you keep buying more!
