View Full Version : Anema & Hunger?

Hello! I had my appendix out on Dec 17 and then had an abscess from it and didn't find out until a surgical recheck (with a different doctor) 3 wks later that I had become quite anemic from all of this. He said it's very common because when you have an abscess or an abdominal infection like that (and mine had been going on for a while, according to the surgeons, because my appendix had in fact burst and was gangrenous) your body stops producing red blood cells. I've been a vegetarian for over 10 yrs and have never been anemic before. I've been taking multivitamins and the doctor said it should get better as I get stronger, but lately I've been constantly weak/starving. My supervisor at work said that it could be from the anemia. Is that true? I just figured it was my body making up for my not having eaten for 2 wks while I was sick.

Yeah, since you were sick, the general body metabolism increased, or decreased in reaction to the surgery and infection. So it will take your body a little while to go back to what its normal hunger responses are. As long as you eat nutritiously it probably will not matter how much you eat for a while.

Heh, I'm not worried about how much I eat (all my pants are falling off after all this :o ) it's just really uncomfortable to feel hungry/nauscious all the time. Food doesn't help me feel less hungry, though sometimes it makes me feel more nauscious. I guess it'll sort itself out eventually.

I am anemic and my appetite has surged the past few weeks, which is irritating too me too. didn't have surgury or any inflammation or anything so it might just be that your body needs to rebuild and needs extra fuel, this is my guess.
