Hi Everyone,

I am extremely worried about my mom as she has been sick for over a week now. Her symptoms are a fever ever night (it wakes her up) she has the chills and is sweating a lot. During the day she does not have a fever but a slight cough. Then at night her fever comes back again! This is going on a week now. Her White blood cells are up so the doc has her on antibiotics but they dont seem to be helping. He found her thryoid is low and she has a slightly elevated Cholestoral. Her Chest Xrays are completely clear and the doc does not find any swollen lymph nodes. I am praying that she has an infection somewhere or a bug of some sort but everything you look at says Lymphoma is a cause of nightly fevers.

Any ideas??? Would the CBC give the doc a clue as to why the white blood cells are high? She asked him if he thought it could be anything more suspicious than an infection or a flu - he said no.

If you have any thoughts I would love to hear them... thank you for reading.

Just my opinion, but I think a week isn't a long time to have fevers only at night, along with sweating. Give it a couple more weeks for any virus to clear up, before you panic. This time of year, especially, is the time when so many things are going around.

Hi Sahaira,

My mom had the same symptoms and was put on numerous antibiotics for almost 3 months. An US of the liver came back fine, all blood tests came back fine.. her white blood cells were elevated with the night sweats, fever, and cough. After a CT scan they found lesions on the liver and through biopsy have determined it is a lymphoma. We are awaiting more test results to find out what is going on anywhere else and what will happen next.

Thanks for your info - was her night sweats caused by her fever and did she ONLY get a fever at night -every single night? She is going to the doctor today and I hope he is very careful in checking everything. What does it mean if it is in the liver? I hope your mom is going to be ok. I cant function without my mom so I am really scared.

 :(

How is the Red blood cell count? Has she been tested for the Ebstein-Barr Virsus? Does she have any bone or joint pain? In the hip area or in other places?

My friends fevers and the night sweats had been going on for months, looking back the cancer must have started up to year ago or so. It was a chest xray in December that revealed enlarged lymph nodes, which led to more tests.

uvm

My dad was just saying tonight that she only gets the fevers at night and was wondering why.
We found out today that it is Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma but they are not sure of the stage. They said it looks as though it is in the early stages but said even if it was astage 4 that it is still very treatable due to the kind of cancer it is. I hope your mom gets some positive results from today's appointment.

Thank you everyone for writing to me on this.
The doctor still thinks that it might be some wierd virus so he wants to check on her in another week. Her red blood cells are fine. The only thing off was an elevated white blood cell count and her thyroid. She IS having joint pain and has been having it for a while now. She told me this morning that her hip was hurting her really badly. It just started up last night. She also suffers from lower back pain but has had this problem for years and years. (It doesnt help that we just got a new puppy that she is picking up every 20 minutes!)

What does having hip pain mean? She has that this morning.

Thanks again!

I am not sure what the hip pain means, but my mom has it too. She had an US that showed nothing. They did not find anything until they did the CT scan. Her white blood cells were slightly eleveated and they gave her numerous rounds of antibiotics that didn't work.
